How To Browse Blocked Sites?

Is google blocked in china? What other sites are blocked?

  • I want to clarify that Google is not blocked in China. It is severely monitored and sometimes the connection will cut out, but you can access google translate and gmail and regular google search, just very slowly and with edited/filtered search results. You can't access google on your iphone without a VPN, the connection will just cut out. However, yahoo works with no problems. Youtube is completely blocked without a VPN, as is facebook. Google and facebook ARE NOT blocked in HK. Source: myself. I live in mainland China (Fujian province) and have a VPN and have travelled to HK and around various other cities: Shanghai, Xian, Xiamen, Chengdu, etc... Sorry to answer my own question, just thought people who are thinking of studying or working in China should be aware of the reality.

  • Answer:

some extra clarificaton: no, google is not blocked officially. however, from time to time (too often! all the time, it feels like) it (and yahoo and bing) breaks down because it is being checked or something. its really really annoying. try using yabigo instead. its a seach engine that combines yahoo, bing and google. it has never faltered so far! facebook is banned but there are proxies - putting https instead of http, f1.chinoxy.com, f2.chinoxy.com, f3.chinoxy.com etc. twitter is banned - i found that out after clicking links from kony2012.com << go there and sign the pledge people!!! certain phrases typed into search engines are banned - for exampe ninja, egypt etc. youtube is banned, the worst of all bans. urrrrrghh :@ parts of the bbc website are banned - the programme schedules and iplayer and you'll find that you can discover new banned things every day on the chinese net... well now you know something else to help pass the time on rainy days...

Google is not blocked. Chinese computers normally search using Baidu but you can re direct to google. If you are taking your own notebook all the search engines will work as normal. Facebook & Youtube are blocked even on your own notebook as are "controversial" websites.......dont expect to be able to read anything you want on , say , Tibet.

Google is not blocked on China's 3G networks -- not sure why you are having trouble with your iPhone, but this is not a normal problem. Everything else is accurate -- no FB, no Twitter, no YouTube, and very, very slow service and dropped connections on English-language websites.

Google is not blocked. You can access google.com.hk . Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Wordpress blog, are blocked. But the Tumblr are open.

Canton Guy

I generally route through to google.co.uk. I don't have many problems but sometimes the throttling is really noticeable. These days I generally use a VPN so no problems there.
