i am going to china in a couple months for study abroad and i am trying to gather as much information as i can. i am already aware about the tea scam and the fact that many stores haggle. that is where my knowledge stops, i am hoping that someone who either visited or lived in china could give me information. anything about customs, traditions, stores and any other facts that i should keep in mind. i am already taking mandarin and i am already consulting many other people, but it is always good to get information from multiple sources.

Forget everything you used to think about China first. Do not believe what the people on the street tell you. If you go to study you will find people at the school or where you stay that you can talk to. These people will be of great help to you if you treat them with respect. To me it was very easy making friends in China and these friends helped me very much. They teach you what to pay for things, how to travel in the city you live in, where to eat and what to pay, where to go and much much more. I am 6 ft tall and I take the clothes I need to China with me. I can find some clothes but it is hard finding things that fit right. If you are going to the north, take warm clothes. I go to Shenyang and in the winter this place gets very very cold for a southern boy. I have home there and always leave clothes there so I do not have to carry as much each trip. Forget everything about home and try to learn all the new things in China. It makes for much more fun and people get a laugh out of the way you do things. Always laugh with them at the things you do and never get upset. If it was turned around you would be laughing at them. The biggest thing is just enjoy yourself and have fun.

You said customs, but there are many customs from different places in China. Don't worry about that because when you stay for a few days, you'll know it by celebrating festivals. Just follow local people. Second, many stores haggle. Yes, but you should know which store you can haggle in. Not all stores can haggle, like supermarket and those marked the price clearly. Chinese culture is both extensive and profound. You should slowly realizes. Now what you should do is planing city you want to go. http://www.bestchinahotel.com/ This is for your reference about your lodge. Hope you enjoy your time.

China is a broad country and so the answers can vary greatly depending upon your location. Are you going to a large city or a small village? Will you be in a destination that sees a lot of tourists or not? I am going to China for the first time this summer. I found a site called GoKunming.com/en (the city I will be in which is in Yunnan province). I know of a site called ChengduBookworm.com (Chengdu is a city in Sichuan province) as well, which is similar in nature. Perhaps you could find a similar site in your location? Google the location with the term expatriate. And, even if you are not going to those locations you might learn something from visiting the sites. A friend of mine just got back from China and she said that they were almost like celebrities there- people wanted to talk to them, take pictures with them, etc. I have read that their sense of personal space is not the same as ours- they may get very close to you. I hear that there is a lot of spitting in public as well. Real Chinese food is nothing like Americanized Chinese food, and you will have a hard time finding a lot of our staples if you are outside of a big city and sometimes even in a big city. If you do find them, they will be expensive or versions of them that are not quite the same. Check your destination- no shots are required to go to China, but some destinations do have some recommended. If you have any health issues, see your doctor ahead of leaving. You might get a prescription filled for antibiotics (just in case- if you do not need them do not use them) and any other meds you need, such as asthma inhalers, epi pen, etc. Take deodorant. I hear it is difficult to find in China. The "fact" that many stores haggle depends on where you are and what type of store it is. The "tea scam" is not always a scam. There are people in China who genuinely like the opportunity to speak English with a native speaker. However, you do not have to order anything or even go to tea with them- offer to speak with them at the local park or meet at X place if you wish. Just as here, there are those who prey on people unfamiliar with their surroundings (i.e. tourists). Take proper precautions. Pickpockets seem to be the biggest threat. Get a good Chinese book from your local library and/or bookstore- from the travel section. I like the DK Eyewitness book for China. It has sections on laws, customs, etc. For language, I really like the Chinese English Bilingual Picture Dictionary. It is small in size, but full of pictures and has the words in English as well as Chinese (both hanyu and pinyin).
