    The great wall was build by several Emperors over a long period of time. It it believe to have started in the 7th C BC. It was then further fortified between 5th C BC to 221BC by the states of Qi, Yan and Zhao. It was then extend by the first Emperor Qin in ca 221 BC. Down through the years other dynasties have build extensions else include Han, Sui, Northern, Jin, Ming and Qing.

look i cant give you the answer without a pretty long answer it started in the spring autumn periods when seven powerful states appeared at the same time. in order to defend themselves they all built walls on their boreders. in 221 BC the emperor qin absorbed the other six states and linked the walls. sine then the great wall of china has been rebuilt and extended through out china. it was built in order to defend troops throughout chinas history. back then there was always some fighting going on. im not sure if it was successful im still looking for that.
