Is DUBAI good for IT professionals?

What is it like for (western) women living in Dubai?

  • My husband and I are health-care professionals considering jobs offers in Dubai, UAE. However, we are both concerned for my freedoms there. My husband is very protective of me and wants to ensure that I can walk outside without being subjected to oppressive (decency) laws. Being a woman can I walk freely (unaccompanied by my husband), not wear a head covering, wear a summer dress with out harassment? Being a female doctor in Canada, I command a lot of respect and would hope that, that same respect would translate in Dubai... otherwise we are prepared to reject our respective job offers.

  • Answer:

No sex on the beach No kissing in public (or in view of others) No erotic text messages No drinking in public places You would be subject to a bit of staring when the horrifying Asian men mentally undress you as you walk past their workplace on the street, but you would eventually get used to it. Unfortunately professional courtesy does not exist among doctors here because most of them get a "basic" pay and a "commission" based on the number of clients they are able to service. Therefore the atmosphere is nauseatingly competitive. There is no preferential treatment or even an attempt to respect the profession by the local cops. My wife had to visit the police station 7 times to get an Insurance paper even after she told them that she is a "Doctor" and needs to attend to work rather than chase papers. If you are white, then things are obviously different. You would be worshiped here. So, if the pay is good, take the plunge from -30 to + 50. All the Best.

no no no. no need to reject any offers, you can live there in the same way you live in canada, as long you dress decently and do not commit any moral or ethical blunder like having sex in the car or kissing on the road as it is still a muslim country, apart from that you can wear jeans and skirts, dress as you like, drink what you like and buy whatever you want as a professional you will be gives highest respect and treated as an equall dubai is a place where everything is allowed except the ones i mentioned below, you will get a mix of east and west here and the nice weather and the beach within easy access and all the aminities that you could wish for make it a heaven, i would say that you also ask the people offering you jobs about the rules and everything and you will be more satisfied, you can even buy property in dubai and make your home there, see http://www.dubaifunholidays.com for more information and dubai and to have a glimpse of what life in dubai is like!!

Dubai is quite modern in its views and you will not be subject to any oppression. Youn should have no problem walking alone it is a safe city. You will not have to wear a head covering and can wear summer dresses. But try to maintain some decency not because it is a muslim country but because some male indian/pakistani/bangla labourers living/working in the city like to hang around in groups and have a good old stare. I'm not sure about the proffesional side but i think female proffesional are very well respected.
