Are there different types of poppy seeds?

  • If i remember righ,t around 2 years ago a Brit got arrested for having poppy seeds of a bread roll on his shoe sole. Today I went shopping at LuLu Hypermarket and found Poppy Seeds sitting on the shelf for sale. Does anybody please have an explanation?

    Poppy seeds (khashkhaash) are widely used in India and Pakistan to treat chronic cough/congestion,specially in small children whose parents dread of antibiotics. These are boiled in water with several other herbs to make a concoction. It is an important element in Ayurved and Hikmat. Besides this,they are also commonly used in cooking.Maybe the kind you saw in LuLu was of very mild strength.

no there is only one type of poppy seed but it have some relation with opium and its widely use in foods.

It's unusual for someone to get arrested, poppy seeds are legal almost everywhere technically, especially if they are used in cooking. There are several varieties however. The opium poppy, papaver somniferum, is/can be illegal in a lot of countries and states, both its seeds and flower. However some companies have licenses to grow them, and certain varieties are allowed to be legally grown for ornamental or culinary purposes.

I have only heard that its not allowed in here in UAE to bring the poppy seeds but i have seen them also in markets as people use it in the food as a spice and may be the poppy seed available in Lulu are roasted or something that can only be used for cooking and can be used as real seeds or cultivating process.
