Why can't the Arab Gulf countries follow the foot steps of Singapore?

Singapore, in my opinion, is probably the country with the brightest future. It is a country that has quite a lot of similarities with the khaleeji countries, although it does have many distinct large differences as well. The similarities between Singapore and the Gulf: Singapore is a small country, with a small local population. Singapore has a large amount of foreign expats. The taxes are low, and she has one of the freest economies in the world, singapore is a travel hub, like many of the countries in the Khaleej.. Poverty is very rare on Singapore, as the ministry provide homes for the poor citizens. The government is very generous to it's citizens, like the khaleeji governments are The differences between Singapore and the Gulf: But the locals are still the majority of the population. As of 2011, the population of Singapore is 5.18 million people, of whom 3.25 million (63%) are citizens while the rest (37%) are permanent residents or foreign workers. Singapore, unlike the gulf, does not have a large amount of oil or gas. It's economy is the second freest in the world, only behind hong kong. The majority of citizens are very skilled, and don't rely on the governmental benefits. It's citizens don't need to travel outside of Singapore to get medical treatment, as Singapore is already a spot for medical tourism, unlike the Gulf. Singapore is the worlds third largest financial centre. Its economy is not dominated by one sector, it's very diverse...which is why it's a developed country. The Gulf countries economies are all 80 or more based on oil. Which is why it's not called a "developed country" by the united nation like Singapore is. Singapore is Singapore has a great human rights record, unlike the gulf countries. Well, as you can see there much more differences between the Khaleej and Singapore! I think we need to stop relying on so much oil, the only reason why we're so successful is because of the oil. Look at Singapore, we need to follow them! Right?

whats up with you and your lame posts? i don't get it, why do you even care? if you like singapore so much why don't you just move there ? or go back to your country, Oh wait if you'r country provided you with good health, education, good jobs n pays you wouldn't be here in the gulf ... i would suggest you stop posting such questions and mind your own business! FFS, the country is only 40 years old ! US providing JOBS for other people that need it doesn't make us lazy ! im not denying all the work and effort people from other countries did to this country but they did it coz they wanted to, its either they love the country or just needed the job and money! who cares why ?! our country never forced anyone to come and work here, they're just giving them opportunities that they NEVER dreamt of in their own countries ! Thank GOD you have such good life :) !

I don't agree with you , because for one thing I know this guy from Singapore he is working here in Dubai because he couldn't find a job in his country. Also you said the citizens of singapore are majority , but that is just on the surface , many of those citizens are Chinese and Indian immigrants , the native or indiginous population is very small. The problem with gulf countries is not the economy or which model to follow because you already got Dubai being a better example for GCC countries , but rather what is holding back GCC economies is lack of democracy and because of this people don't give more effort in improving themselves and the places they live in because they feel their government does not represent them or they think it is not their responsibility. And from a foreigner point of view they know they can't become naturalized and thus only work for the salary and don't care to give back to the country because they know at some point they will be leaving to go back where they came from. On the other hand if they were offered things like permenant residenece or citizenship that would completly change the way they feel about giving back to the place they live in. So on this I agree with SAS as well. But don't forget that in the region of Singapore generally speaking they use cheaper labor and there are no wars or terrorism stigma or high insurance costs as is the case in the gulf or middle east in general. This is an important factor for investors.

they really dont like to follow any one but want to succeed on their own thinking which is somehow is successful until now but its success is not guaranteed in near future. human rights huh? u know we can actually make it better in gulf but when the nationals of gulf r not even accepting that they have some human rights issue in their country than whats next? what we can expect from them? u have to realize that there is a problem than u can reach the solution "simple". singapore have so many electronics production plants which belongs to huge companies like panasonic, sony, toshiba, sansui, akai, etc. while gulf is having nothing like that. i dont want to compare these two parties on laziness. another similar country to singapore is brunei
