What's it really like (for a tourist) in Dubai?
-
I have seen lots of pictures of Dubai and seen some neat things (indoor skiing, huge waterparks, etc). But, I am a Canadian who has only traveled to the US and Western Europe and going to someplace like Dubai (or Cuba, India, China, South America, etc) is a little daunting. What is it really like in Dubai? What is it like as a (Canadian/American) tourist? Are there many waterparks? I've heard there is a huge one. What's it like? Thanks.

I'm American, and Dubai is amazing! Its really almost surreal how they turned sand into a gleaming city. There are so many things to do, here is a list: Go to the top of the Burj Khalifa (world's tallest building) Desert Safari Dubai Mall Waterpark at Atlantis The Palm (there are other waterparks, like Wild Wadi) Indoor skiing at Mall of The Emirates Jumeirah Beach Hatta Fort Dolphin Watching Abra by the Creek Souq (traditional market) Camel riding Underground Aquarium Tea at the Burj Al Arab There are endless things to do, and it really is a very fun place. For an American/Canadian tourist things are pretty easy. English is commonly used and there are people in Dubai from all over the world. There are indeed many water parks, which are very fun! Women can wear swimsuits, as Dubai is more liberal. In Dubai there are a ton of nice (and cheap) hotels, an easy metro system and you can find food from anywhere in the world. I think if you plan to start exploring more of the world (like India, China etc like you said) Dubai is a great place to start, as it is more westernized. I have seriously never met a tourist who didn't like Dubai, no matter where they were from. Sure, its longer away than western Europe, but you will come home with so many fun stories. Its also a family place, so if you have kids its very kid friendly (don't worry there are nightclubs etc if you want to party ;-) ). Go for it! Its safe, fun, and you won't regret it!

I've lived in UAE for two years. Dubai is nice for North Americans. Everyone speaks English here. There are at least two big water parks. Wild Wadi and Atlantis. It's pretty much a mall culture here. They build gigantic malls and everything is centered around them. Ski Dubai is in the Mall of the Emirates. It's nice but its not that great compared to the Canadian Rockies or in Utah/Colorado. There are some beaches in Dubai, but very small waves in the Gulf (we call it the Persian Gulf in the West, but in UAE it is called the Arabian Gulf). To get any waves you have to drive about two hours to the Indian Ocean in Fujairah. There's also the Dubai Mall which is the biggest in the world, Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi has the world's fastest roller coast, and if you like desert adventure there is plenty of that. You can find a lot of good Indian and Arabic food here too. You can get alcohol at the hotels but pork is hard to find and the other meats are all halal (arabic version of kosher).
