What should I do to protect myself?

What should i do to protect myself when I go to another country?

  • I am planning a trip to South West Africa and I am trying to find out what I should to do protect myself for being a victim of a kidnapping or being robbed. I am going to be traveling all by myself.... I was thinking about taking some self defense classes but I know that is not going to always protect me. What else can I do to protect myself????

  • Answer:

The best answer is not to go alone. There is always safety in numbers no matter where you go whether it's in the USA or South Africa or Mexico or Jamaica.......the same rule applies.....find a pal and stick together........be aware of your surroundings. If you do end up traveling by yourself.....Never let anyone you randomly run into know that you're alone.

Well, South West Africa is Namibia...if that's where you're going. I've never been there, but it doesn't seem too bad. But still I would advise not to go out by yourself.

CRIME: Crime is a serious concern in Namibia, but visitors who employ common-sense preventive measures normally enjoy an incident-free stay. Incidents of violent crime directed specifically against Americans or other foreigners are rare, but the number of overall incidents continues to increase. The most common crimes are property-motivated crimes of opportunity, including pick pocketing, purse snatching, vehicle theft, and vehicle break-ins. Violent crimes are less frequent than non-violent incidents. Common sense measures such as being alert to one's surroundings, avoiding isolated areas of town, not leaving valuables in parked cars, keeping car doors locked and windows up while driving, safeguarding purses, wallets and especially cellular phones are the best deterrents against becoming a victim. Drivers should exercise caution at rest stops outside of towns or away from gasoline stations. Crime Until Independence was granted in 1990, crime was virtually unknown in Namibia. However, the last decade can seen a great increase in crime, mainly due to the high unemployment rate and the influx of poor people to the urban slum areas. However, relative to the other African countries, Namibia is still one of the safest holiday destinations.

It is a bit silly going on your own. Be aware of your surroundings. Unfotunately you will stand out like a sore thumb, as I assume you are white and these places everyone knows everyone so they will know that you are a tourist. Dont keep alot of cash on you and dont flash it about. Don't take any flashy jewellry as you dont really need it in the middle of Africa and it will only be a temptation to robbers. Don't go out alone in the dark. Don't go on your own.

its not called south west africa anymore.the new country is now called namibia.my parents and i used to go on trips to the old SWA when i was little.beautiful landscape.back then , SA and SWA were the same country.we were looking after it for the UN (unofficially).my german wife and i , fell in love ,amid the sand dunes, outside Sossusvlei.we are now happily married , living in münchen, deutchland. let me tell you something about Namibia.you can drive for miles (300 max ) without bumping into another person.the landscape will blow you away.the wife and i never encountered any hostility whatsoever from anybody.there is only 2 million people in a country the size of germany. we are going back to south africa for a trip and including 2 weeks of our time to the land that made us fall in love - Namibia.you will not be dissapointed. http://www.namibiareservations.com/sesriemcanyone.html
