What are South Africa's capital cities?

  • I understand that officially South Africa has three capital cities, Capetown (for the Parliament), Pretoria (for the executive) and Bloemfontein (for the judiciary). However, South Africa's top court, the constitutional court, sits in Johannesburg. The Supreme Court of appeal (the top court in all non-constitutional cases) sits in Bloemfontein. Why is Bloemfontein a capital city, and not Johannesburg and Bloemfontein both capital cities?

    Historically when the Union of South Africa was created, three capitals were declared: Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Pretoria, with Pretoria being the primary capital as such. The Constitutional court is a new pretty useless creation.

Pretoria, houses Government Cape Town, houses Parliament Bloemfontein houses the judiciary. However, Bloem is not recognised by the people as a capital city. It is said to be a capital city, just to keep everyone happy. Pretoria has to be a capital city as that's where the union buildings are, and that carries great historical value, thus housing our Government, the same applies to Cape Town, thus housing our parliament. Internationally and locally, South Africa's capitals are Pretoria and Cape Town.

South Africa has two capital cities: Capetown and Pretoria. Any other cities are NOT officia capitols. EDIT: I concede my inaccurate statement. Bloemfontein is the JUDICIAL capitol.

When the Union of South Africa was formed, Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Cape Town was the capitals of the erstwhile Free State (Independent Republic) Transvaal (Independent republic) and Cape Colony (Colony of Great Brittian). The three capitals has been retained since then.
