What can I pack when going to Italy in August?

What clothes should I pack, going to South Africa in late August?

  • Hello, I am going to South Africa in late August, Cape Town, Mpumalanga and Kruger Park. What clothes should I pack? I know it's still winter there. I was thinking about a duvet and some sweaters and a denim jacket. What else? And what about malaria tablets? Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

Hello Tarryn come to S.A. and have fun ! Kruger P and Mpumalanga in August are just coming into spring so the nights / early mornings can be cold 2 / 6 deg C but the days from 9-00 to 4-00 are very warm / hot 20-25 deg C. This is a sub-tropical area. Cape Town is a winter rainfall Mediteranian climate and could be very wet / cold days at 6 to 14 deg C. Malaria will not be a factor in the colder months in KNP but take the precautions just the same. No need to worry about this almost anywhere else in S.A. especially the Cape.

Cape Town will have a typical Mediterranean climate at that time, cool but not cold since Spring is just one month away. Further north to Kruger it would be warmer. Regarding malaria tablets. . .it would not hurt since South Africa is flooded with illegal immigrants from the rest of Africa and they brought the parasite with them, as a result it is endemic in certain areas especially around Kruger. Another piece of advice is to get some type of Gamma globulin or other type of Hepatitis prophylactic starting ten days prior to arrival. I suggest you will need to consider the list below when preparing for your holiday. Although personal tastes differ I suggest you pack: Comfortable brown or beige or kaki color casual cloths that included: Long trousers, shorts, underwear, tracksuits, light walking shoes, long socks, 3 light shirts, long-sleeved shirt, sweater, bathing costume, light rainproof jacket or anorak and hat. Smart-casual clothes for eveningwear, although a few up-market destinations will expect something more formal. Essential Equipment: Water bottle, personal toiletries, lip balm, sunscreen SPF 30+, insect repellent, waterproof copy of ID document / passport / plain tickets. If you are traveling north Malaria tablets, insect repellent and (if you are going to the Kruger National Park or Northern KwaZulu-Natal) a mosquito net. Prescription medications: Make sure you have enough to last during your trip, as well as a copy of the prescription's. Over-the-counter anti-diarrhea medicine (just in case!) if you think you'll have trouble finding a pharmacy on your trip. Visa or MasterCard credit card and/or Travelers Cheques - Diners and American Express are not always accepted. Keep travel documents in a safe place - many airlines no longer resubmit lost tickets and require a police affidavit if you want to avoid paying the full fare for their replacement. Optional Equipment: Sunglasses, camera, binoculars, compass, maps.

Cape town is mostly cold and wet during that time. And believe it but August and September are snow season so it canbecome freezing. Up in the Krugar things are much dryer and warmer, but chilly at night. I often advise people NOT to take maleria tablets, as it is not 100% proof, and canmask the symptoms. All you need to do is mark off in you calander 4 weeks and then 6 weeks after you LEAVE Kruger. If you feel fluey at those times, then specifically ask a GP to test for maleria. Often the treatment of Maleria is CHEAPER than the prevention. My mom is a doctor and often has experiance with this. I do also agree on the bringing more money and less luggage. Joburg International Airport is famous for luggage theft, so no point in brining stuff for them to steal. Also be very wary of the crime. It IS AS BAD AS EVRYONE SAYS, and dont take it lightly.

In Mpumalanga winter's nearly over, and it is not quite so cold, some warm clothes is always wise but the days should be warm, malaria tablets is good, just be alert, don't carry a lot of cash or be alone after dark - enjoy it, our land is beautiful, particulate Cape Town and Blyde River Canyon

you have a greater chance catching aids than malaria in SA( no harm intended with this answer)

Kruger park can get quite chilly in the evenings /early mornings especially if you are going on game drives. (a woolly hat won't go unappreciated if you are on an open vehicle) The days can be mild but I would suggest packing tracksuit / fleeces etc for the evenings.(something warmer than a denim jacket - a jacket with some kind of fleece lining) Parts of Mpumulanga have had snow in winter! so pack your warm clothes. If you are visiting the Lowveld - same as Kruger, warmish during the day and chilly at night. Panorama Route,eg Canyon, Graskop and Sabie can get very cold. Regarding malaria - although the malaria "season" is lower during our winter months, it would be best to consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding this.
