Number of cities: 9 Number of towns: 387 This is current information, and not for 1994. I don't have the information for 1994 specifically and I don't know where you would find that. I searched in google.co.za using "number of towns cities in south africa 1994" and followed the 3rd link "List of postal codes in South Africa - Wikipedia, the free ..." (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_postal_co… Then I followed the links on wikipedia to "List of towns in South Africa" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_towns_in_South_Africa) and "List of cities in South Africa" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_South_Africa). I pasted the above information into Microsoft Excel, deleted unnecessary lines and used the row count to count the number of cities and towns in South Africa (I justed counted the cities though, there are only 9!). Just one problem though. I saw that Kimberley, Northern Cape was not listed as a city and wondered whether it was classified as a town, but it wasn't on the list of towns. Who knows how many other towns/cities have been left out? So in other words there are at least 388 towns and 9 cities or 387 towns and 10 cities if you include Kimberley, depending on whether you classify it as a city or a town (I think it's a town, it's not all that big...) Hope this helps.

each town/city was basically it's own municipality prior to 1994. Here is a list with all the South african towns/cities (it's the same amount as in 1994, some of the names have just changed) - it should give you the closest answer... unfortunately i don't have time to count it myself! hope it helps!

I do not know, Zim. If I may venture a guess there would have been something like 500 city or town councils. The idea of metro or area councils was a good one on paper. The successes, or rather the lack thereof, must at this stage be a reason of real concern though.

It's also a guess, 998.
