    I'll put it bluntly: It's not safe if you're stupid. If you run around flashing expensive jewellery and equipment, huge wads of cash, go walking at night or in dodgy areas and you don't lock your doors... then yes, you are in danger. But if you're smart and don't draw such attention to yourself then you're as safe as the rest of people in the country, which is to say: yes there's a chance that you'll be a victim of crime but heck, there's a chance of that in every country. Service delivery protests: Just stay away from wherever they're protesting and you'll be fine. So just to repeat: It's a gorgeous country with many colourful people and it's worth a visit but if you're going to be stupid then it's going to slap you silly.

Oh for heavens sake! There is nothing wrong with our country! You wont notice the bit of racism (its probably worse where you come from) and you wont notice the crime, except if you walk by yourself down a dark alley late at night. It's the best place you will ever go to for a holiday, you'll want to return every year, but whatever. I've rather had it with this silly negativity. People have issues and are narrow minded and then they make belief that their country are worse off than others when, looking at the facts, they might find it's not so at all.

For it's wildlife and scenic beauty , yes it is, and i am sure there is crime and protests everywhere else as well

There are islands of relative safety in South Africa. You must just ask where is safe. It is a lovely country to visit, great nature and lots of wildlife (the people:-D) Also from other answers, I must say that crime is the not same as elsewhere. Crime is very special in SA. For e.g. A protest in Germany means sending an application, a peaceful and orderly procession at a set schedule and then back to work.People know when there is a scheduled protest and the roads are specially blocked by the police for them. A protest in SA means basically an excuse to riot: break shop windows, loot shops, stab people, cause general mayhem and not return to work. Crime in some other countries means breaking and entering, stealing stuff and leaving.Criminals do not always want to hurt or kill their victims. Crime in SA means having to injure, murder and rape whoever happens to be in the house during the robbery.

You seem to have an opinion all ready, so why ask? Go visit Disney Land in Florida instead, just don't wonder why no one at work is interested in seeing your boring holiday photos. (It is really safe there so don't worry OK) What about visiting Australia and go diving at the barrier reef, you will have something to talk about with your friend since all of them have done that too. (It is also very safe there)

Yeah, but it depends what kind of person you are. South-Africa is a really racist country as well, which was called Apartheid. So, people from other colors, may not talk to you, or even just call you names. But it is a really good place, if are a kind of person, who doesn't care what is going on.
