In your opinion what is better: Eastern African safaris or Southern African safaris?
-
I really want to go on holiday and have been wanting to explore Africa as well as going on a safari. Which one would you recommend? I hear Eastern Africa is where safaris 'originated' from whilst Southern African safaris is still good... I'm confused... Also I want to visit one where I would be able to ride on an elephant... Any help is appreciated.

Answer:
Kruger is a bit like Disneyland compared to the harsher bush areas. The Masaai Mara in Kenya is amazing, Botswana is one of the best, both the latter more expensive than SA. If you want to ride on an Elephant, you will have to go to India, African Elephants are (thankfully) only wild and untamed and are not as "docile" as Asian Elephants so you will not see anyone riding on an Elephant in Africa # Watch out for the Jeep Jockeys though! I just got back from South Africa last week, wow we had an amazing time on Safari there. We went to the Kruger National Park and saw the big 5. We also saw 3 cheetah kill a warthog. We stayed just outside the park in a great lodge and the highlight was we rode african elephants. If you want i can give you the website?

We went on Safari to South Africa a year ago. We went to Kruger Park and Thorneybush game reserve. We had a fantastic time! The great thing about Kruger Park is the ability to rent a car and self-drive. We can't wait to go back (2013, we hope!) To the first poster: You saw a cheetah kill?! I'm jealous! Now I want to go back even more!

Kenya is more tourist driven. Closer to Europe and more "African" than South Africa. On the down side as a tourist you will be hearded like sheep from one tourist trap to the next. South Africa has a more diverse range of activities and has a better infrastructure. If you are cautious you can travel the country on your own which I find more rewarding.

I can recommend South Africa The Tour that I have done is with Thomas Cook the tour is called The Best of South Africa and the holiday was great the people are nice as well as the local food. The place to be able for a ride on an elephant is in knysna and you can also get the chance to feed them aswell.I got to do was to interact with three Cheetahs and got some great photos one of the photos is a close up so I got that put on to a mouse mat. Also you get the chance to visit Soweto which is township it is a chance to see how they live and a chance to see nelson mandela house. I would say the best time to go would be September as it comfortable not to hot I would take a jumper ,raincoat, sunhat sunglasses ,binoculars a good camera plenty of m/cards and batteries/charger also suntan cream. So have a great time once you been you will never go to a zoo.
