What are the best places to study undergraduate journalism?

Rhodes vs. UCT (Journalism)?

  • I want to study Journalism (and Media), but can't decide which university is better. The reasons I want to go to Rhodes are: -It's apparenly the best university to go to to study journalism -The students seem to get along in that there doesn't seem to be segregation along racial lines -It's away from the city (less distractions, also a con) BUT: -Students seem to have a slacker mentality, and I don't want friends who are underachievers -It's not one of the best in the world and ranks at 900-and-something -I think Grahamstown is a bit dangerous, but then again, I'm from Gauteng :D As for UCT...: -Might have a higher standard since you have to write an entrance exam and what not. -Students probably don't slack as much -Cape Town looks really...clean and safe-ish -It's the best in Africa -It's in the city (in case I wanna get a part-time job, also a con) -I think that there are lots more international students BUT -Students don't really mix (white ppl hang out with white ppl exclusively, Asians stick with Asians etc.) -Might not have a really good journalism department What should matter more? I really want to have a well-rounded university experience that just doesn't only include partying/studying. Are some of my assumptions about these places wrong?

  • Answer:

Um, and also the fact that UCT doesn't offer Journalism as a degree course, only a one year course, or a post grad.

If you're keen on journalism, come to Rhodes. The department is world-renowned for its excellence, and is very well run. As a university, Rhodes is very unique. It is a close-knit community with only 7000 students, and everything is in walking distance. It may have a reputation as a party university, but this is unfounded. During exam time in res you can hear a pin drop. Most students are fully commited to their studies. Grahamstown is such an interesting city to live in, and although it is small it offers so much. Rhodes is the ultimate small-town university experience, similar to the type you see in American movies.
