Has anyone done any volunteer programs in South Africa?

I feel like I need to travel more before I settle down and was looking at a volunteer program. I would love to work with the kids in Africa. Has anybody ever done this sort of program before?

Answer:
Do you have a 4 year degree? You could go with the peace corp. or the red cross who do not require degrees :)

In high school I was a part of a group that went to a childrens home every Wednesday after school. We helped out with the AIDS orphans there.... I just wish I could remember the name of the place but it was in Yeoville. I'm not really sure if its still around though. If you could phone Athlone Girls High School and ask them for further details. I'm sure the children will truly touch your heart and your help wil be truly appreciated...

No, a lot of churches are involved in outreach programs, but you would have to join the church. One organisation I know of is Habitat for Humanity (look them up) they build homes for the homeless and take any volunteers regardless of skills. I dont think you have to belong to a church group to help them. Years ago (12) I worked at the bank and as an RDP (remember those days?) project we raised money to build a school, it was great, and when we went to the party at the end of the year I was brought to tears by all those happy kids! Its definately memories that will shape you forever

In the 'old days' I volunteered to each and every 'volunteer unit' in the SADF. We worked with many kids carrying AK's but I suspect that's not what you are after, yeah? Get hold of the Soweto Town council and ask them for info.

Do yourself a favour and stay away from Africa. I live here and have seen many cases where 'good doers" come here and try to 'save the children" - what you have to understand is this. Africa is run by dictators, SA is the only democracy in Africa. Crime is very prevelant here, violent crime! European students come here and try and socialise with the 'local folk", they brefriend some 'locals" and end up partying with them in the townships (look that up and see what I mean), she is then murdered and raped and left for dead. So if you are planning to come here, remember that Africa is truly the dark continent and that you will have to have your wits about you when you are here.
