How many cities are there in South Africa?

What are the major cities in South Africa?

  • I know that Johannesburg and Capetown are one of the best cities in the world, are there any other city in South Africa with the same level? what are they? and if there is a difference between each of them kindly categorize them?

  • Answer:

Hi, - Durban I live here, its a cool place the wildlife and beaches are nice. However it has a high crime rate, one of the highest in the country. It boasts the beautiful Moses Mabhida sports complex which is arguably one of the most beautiful on Earth. - Pretoria/ Johannesburg Although its one of the prime destinations in SA, I feel that its one of the most boring. Theres no real siteseeing there apart from the shopping complexes. Most people who live there are there for business reasons. The crime rate is high. - Cape Town One of the greatest cities in the world. I havent been there in a while, but from what I hear from family there, ITS GREAT!, defnitely go there. The crime rate is stable apart from anywhere near the Cape Flats area. You cant really swin in the beaches there, its too cold. - East London I havent been there in a long time, however all I remember is that I had a good time there.

~Pretoria - Executive Capital of South Africa. I find it is a very cramped city, I do not visit there very often but quite a few of my family members live there and we occasionally go and stay with them there but it is not really to my liking, I see it as a business city. ~Johannesburg - The largest city in SA population-wise, While Johannesburg is not officially one of South Africa's three capital cities it is the Provincial Capital of Gauteng. It is home to the Constitutional Court, South Africa's highest court and is served by O.R. Tambo International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Africa and the main airport in South Africa, it is because of this that like Pretoria, I see it as business city, rather than a tourist destination or somewhere I would like it live, however, I do only ever go there when I'm going to the airport so I can't really pass judgment. ~Cape Town - The legislative capital of South Africa and the largest city in terms of land area. This is the city my family are originally from and although I haven't been there since I was little I think it's a wonderful place to visit. It is South Africa's most popular tourist destination, probably due to the fact it is home to Table Mountain and Cape Point and is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. ~Kimberley - Capital of the Northern Cape and is a city of considerable historical significance due its diamond mining past. I have never visited it so cannot really give my opinion on it. ~Durban - The largest city in KwaZulu-Natal and the third largest city in the country. It is known for having the busiest port in South Africa and it's beaches and climate make it a big tourist destination. Once again, I have never actually visited the city myself, I'll have to make some of these places a must to visit though, need to learn to travel more. ~Port Elizabeth - This city I definitely HAVE visited as it is only an hour from my houses so is the easiest to access. PE is known as the Water sports Capital of Africa and has two nicknames, "The Windy City" and "The Friendly City", see great place, haha. It is near the Garden Route, a popular and beautiful stretch of the South-Eastern Coast and a good tourist destination for those who like to enjoy gorgeous beaches AND the city. ~East London - The only River Port in South Africa. It is mainly a business city and only has a few tourist attractions like the Zoo and Aquarium but is surrounded by little villages which are very beautiful and peaceful. ~Bloemfontein - Meaning fountain of flowers, it is the Judicial capital of the country and the capital of the Free State Province. The city is a great one for the rose lovers also being known as the "city of roses" due to an abundance of roses growing in the city and a rose festival that is held annually.
