When is Mother's Day?

Who decides when Mothers day, Fathers day and etc are?

  • Just wondering now that Mothers day is close?

  • Answer:

The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and the earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, the early Christians in England celebrated a day to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. By a religious order the holiday was later expanded in its scope to include all mothers, and named as the Mothering Sunday. Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter), "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England. - (This should answer the when) During this time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday, the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch.

Interesting topic. Back in SA, I was accustomed to Mother's Day being in May and Father's Day being in June. When I got to Oz, Mother's Day is still in May, but Father's Day is in September! So as far as your question goes, I would also like to know who is it that decides.

Sydney Harbour

Who cares, Black people like us don't bother about things like that. It messes with drinking time.

Jacob Zuma

Beats me too, i think it is just a money making racket anyway.

Great question Ayiza. But I always thought that Mothers Day was always the second Sunday in May and Fathers Day the third Sunday in June. It normally works out that way every year. But who decided that beats me

Nay
