get the south african ID number of the person who will receive the the cheque. All they have to do is go to their nearest post office with their id. They don't need to have an account with the post office. Make sure u give the US post office the name and area of the SA post office to avoid confusion. You can't. What you can do is use you're debit or credit card there. All you have to do is notify your bank that you will be over seas or else they will block your account because they see it's being used in another country and they'll think it was stolen. Your other option is to take dollars and have it changed into Rands.

I have got a practical example which might help you. I used an HSBC cheque ( UK bank) in South Africa Standard Bank. The problem is they had to wait untill it cleared up and that took about 3 weeks as a cheque belonged to a foreign bank, but eventually I cashed it.
