Studying politics in South Africa, Cape town university?
-
Hello, I am currently living and studying in Norway, but lately i'm feeling bored here. The city where I live there are 300 000 people, and not much to do. Also I want a new experience, and therfore want to study abroad. Lately I have been looking into studying politics at the Cape Town university. Its a pretty wild idea, but the reason i'm looking into South Africa is because: - Its cheap - Its something completly new - Cape Town university has higher ratings than the university I go too Does anyone know if this type of study in SA is good, or has any other information you wish to share? I am planning on taking a 3 year course.

Answer:
Hi there, UCT is an outstanding university with an excellent Political Science department. That said, a major alone in Political Science will not make you very employable in the South African context. Furthermore, the course will in some senses be highly focused on the South African context, particularly given the Department of Education's ridiculous and untenable vision of creating: "centres of academic learning that promote a truly African scholarship," viz. for e.g. the incorporation, of "African" political philosophy (read: the political ideologies of the Nguni and Sesotho ethnicities) into university level Political Science. Given the said national focus, it might be advisable to do a Pol. Sci. degree in Norway if you plan to stay there .

I cannot speak for UCT, you'll have to contact them and ask the right questions regarding international recognition and so on. I do know they have a very good name in SA. I can speak for Cape Town however. It is a friendly city with a lot of diversity. It is also very scenic, you will have the most beautiful mountain ranges, beaches, forests, vineyards, city etc all within an hour's drive of where you are. The nightlife is also very good in the city. You definitely won't be disappointed.
