How hard is it to get into the University of Cape Town in SA?

  • I'm looking to study the humanities at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. I currently have an 85% average, and hoping for it to rise even more. How hard would it be for an international student (from Canada) to get into Cape Town's university?

  • Answer:

Eighty-five percent is an excellent aggregate and should allow you entry into most courses. That said, placements for courses such as medicine and actuarial science are very competitive and therefore it would be naive to imagine that your results would guarantee you a place in one of the said courses (or other courses, such as aeronautical engineering). Nevertheless, your marks would certainly make you a strong contender for selection. Entry requirements differ across courses though, both in terms of the matric (i.e. your final year of schooling) marks required and in terms of the high-school subjects required. If you don't have science, maths and biology, for example, you will not be selected for medicine, even if you got an A for all your subjects. Maybe you can full us in with more detail such that we can give you a more precise answer? Anyway, best of luck.
