What is the population of Seychelles?

Does Seychelles have native inhabitants?

  • By that I mean, are there people that cannot trace their lineage back to another country? Seems like a stupid question, but I thought I read somewhere that Seychelles doesn't have a 'native' population (other than immigrants from England, France, ect), but I can't seem to find that again. I know people live there now, but most seem to be of English/French decent...

  • Answer:

The Seychelles were uninhabited when discovered around the 12C by what is thought to be Maldivian seafarers, as this is the earliest remains found. Further landings by Arab traders and then later by Portuguese sailors who used Seychelles as a restocking point for water and food. It was also a pirate port up until the French took control, the island was named after Jean Moreau de Séchelles, Louis XV’s Minister of Finance. The Seychelles are a strategic set of islands between Africa and Asia and as such were taken by England around the time of the Napoleonic wars. This is why there are people of French and British decent. .
