How to find heat reflective curtains?

  • Hello I am looking for curtains that will reflect the heat out from the house. The temperature in the summer gets extremely hot indeed where I live, so I need to keep the house cool. Any ideas on how to find curtains or blinds; or what things that I will need to reflect the heat. CREED

  • Answer:

--- "Roughly 40 percent of the unwanted heat that builds up in your home comes in through windows. Reflective window coatings are one way to reflect heat away from your home. These coatings are plastic sheets treated with dyes or thin layers of metal. Besides keeping your house cooler, these reflective coatings cut glare and reduce fading of furniture, draperies, and carpeting. Two main types of coatings include sun-control films and combination films. Sun-control films are best for warmer climates because they can reflect as much as 80 percent of the incoming sunlight. Many of these films are tinted, however, and tend to reduce light transmission as much as they reduce heat, thereby darkening the room. Combination films allow some light into a room but they also let some heat in and prevent interior heat from escaping. These films are best for climates that have both hot and cold seasons. Investigate the different film options carefully to select the film that best meets your needs. The coatings are applied to the interior surface of the window. Although you can apply the films yourself, it is a good idea to have a professional install the coatings, particularly if you have several large windows. This will ensure a more durable installation and a more aesthetically pleasing look." Heat ReflectiveTips: -Install white window shades, drapes, or blinds to reflect heat away from the house. Windows with spectrally selective coatings on the glass reflect some of the sunlight, keeping your rooms cooler. -Close curtains on south- and west-facing windows during the day. -Install awnings on south- and west-facing windows. -Apply sun-control or other reflective films on south-facing windows to reduce solar gain. -Using louver windows http://metrotechsteel.com/MyImages/louvers.jpg --- Please go to Q/A of the same issue at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r19068175-Block-out-the-heat-on-windows very good luck. ---

Maybe you can find something to put on the windows like they have for cars. There are many companies for window tinting, but I don't know if they can come to your house and do it. For example VKool. I always see greenish tint on house windows, so I was assuming it's for the sun and heat, but I don't know. I don't own my own home, so I haven't been faced with this problem.

Alhamdulilah

as alhamdullah says above.. there are companies that can put a plastic sheet thingy on your windows similar to cars.. Im not sure if that vcool company does homes. maybe.. When we built out home, we had the reflective/tint added in our windows we installed.. it sure helps keep the home cool.. You can always tack up aluminum foil, but to me that looks just like trailor park windows.. maybe saco has some window treatment thingies..

Mintee

cover your windows with silver foil (aluminium foil). use tape or sticky tac to adhese to the window.. if you just want blinds the whiter the more of the suns rays it will reflect. black absorbs.. (will make hotter)
