Travelling from Fez to Marrakech. Would it be easy to do the High Atlas mountains?

  • I'm going to Morocco in May and am planning on travelling up to Fez from Marrakech. I'm planning on it taking me 2 weeks or less to do this. This is an itinerary I read in Lonely Planet which seemed to suit me. I'm flying home from Marrakech and would love to detour past the High Atlas for 2/3 days trekking on the way back. Has anybody travelled from Fez to do this and got any tips. I'm in Morocco for just over 2 weeks and if anybody thinks I should be doing something different or has any suggestions about things they think I have to do or see then I;m all ears as I really want to get the most out of this trip. My budget is around £60 per day (do you think this will be adequate?) I'm travelling with my brother and we can rough it if we have to if it means we have more to spend on food and trips. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The High Atlas can be a bit tricky. Weather wise it is unpredictable and it is difficult to get around with bus stations few and far between. If you stick to the more populated areas you should be fine but honestly beside the Barbary Apes there isn't a whole lot to see. Fez is my favorite city and you should definitely spend some time in the old medina. I wasn't really impressed with Marrakech. It seemed to be more touristy with a lot more scammer, like taxi drivers who won't use the meters. If you want to go off the beaten path a little the Todra and Dades gorges are beautiful, although once again it can be a challenge getting there. Essouria is supposed to be awesome. But why not go to the dessert while you're there? You're budget should be fine as long as you're careful. It's super easy to just get street food that is cheap. Also Moroccan currency isn't strong comparatively.
