What is it like in Marrakech for women?
-
My mum and I are going to Marrakech at the end of the month and I have heard lots of horror stories of women travelling in Marrakech on their own, I have family living in Turkey and go there a lot so I have a vague idea of what the differences are between Western culture etc. I have quite pale skin and dark hair, I heard something about this being seen as exotic and therefore you may get more attention from men? Thanks x

Answer:
Almost everybody who is a tourist receive attention from men. From a pale to a dark(er) skin tone. I thought it was gonna be awful, but it was quite okay. I went my mother as well and she also has pale skin and dark hair. The only people who were bothering us were guys trying to sell stuff, but they weren't really persistent. I haven't been to Turkey, but my mother has (to Icmeler and Marmaris to be exact) and according to her, the sellers there are much more persistent in then in Marrakech. Have fun!

Marrakech is a big tourist city and attracts all sorts of opportunists. I've seen young Moroccans who pose as French guys sitting in tourist areas, they let their hair grow longer and use a body language that seems to be begging for attracting women. It's best to dress on the modest side if you want to be respected and if you need help you are more likely to get it. If you are in a crowd, be aware that there are young men who like to rub up against unsuspecting women and ejaculate on their clothing. I've witnessed that in a very modestly dressed woman in the Marjane Supermarket in Marrakech, and it wasn't all that crowded at the time. Also be careful of purse snatchers and pickpockets who frequent crowded medinas and souks. Best to hide your money and valuables, including camera, if you are browsing and shopping. There are also a variety of beggars, young men, boys, older women in Marrakech who seem to make a living doing so, some of them will follow you around and speak your language until you rudely dismiss them. You need to do so in a hard tone of voice and do it loudly in order for them to understand you mean business. Don't be too smiley-friendly either, they take that an invitation to harass you. There are also young men posing as "tour guides" to help you get better prices but they are only doing so to get a cut of the money that you would save if you use them. They may be false guides and it's hard to tell the difference, real tour guides should have a license to do so. One of the hardest things to deal with in Morocco is that taxi drivers and vendors won't give you a fair price. Taxi drivers who know that you are from another country will jack the price up very high, and you may have to go through a dozen or so before you can get a lower deal. A local Moroccan would get a good price within 2 or 3 tries if that many. If you go during the winter you may get better prices for goods, but if one of you speaks French that is a good tool to use. French get a better deal that other Europeans and Americans because they know how to cut it. It can be very frustrating dealing with those people, and I've come to the conclusion that Moroccan is not such a bargain in vacationing, especially for those from Europe who have so many other nearby places to travel.
