Day trip from Beirut to Baalbek, with stops at wineries? Anyone done this?
-
My husband and I want to hit Baalbek and then go to some wineries on the way back to Beirut in a day trip. We're on a pretty tight budget, so we prefer to take the cheap route on things. What's the best way to do this? Does anyone know of a tour company that does this, and how much that might cost? Or would it be better to just rent a car? Also, what are everyone's favorite wine makers in Lebanon? I am from California and am quite spoiled, but have been living in Egypt for a year, and the wine here is completely filthy-disgusting. I've heard Lebanese wine is good, but I've heard countless Egyptians gush about how good the wine here is... so I hesitate to believe the good Lebanese wine rumors! Are they true? lol

Answer:
you have 2 choices: 1. go with a group where you take a pullman bus and they take you to Baalbeck, Anjar and Zahle stopping by 2 or 3 wineries where you can taste and buy wines and sometimes have lunch if it's in the program. The whole thing would cost somewhere between 50 and 80$ per person. 2. Rent a car it's less expensive than a taxi who would be staying with you all day (if it's a small car should cost 40$ per day). Go to Baalbeck and Anjar then Zahle and stop by Ksara (my fav winery) where you will have a tour of the caves then free wine tasting and lunch if you want (buffet where you can get plates and pay for them if you want 1 charcuterie plate 1 cheese plate 1 salad and 1 bottle of wine and free bread 30$, the food is enough for 3 pple).

The best offer is to go on a full day tour to Baalbeck and visit the wineries. WildDiscovery has 2 full-day tours (Monday and Saturday) to Baalbeck,Ksara (winery) and Anjar. It would cost you about 140 usd including all expenses. It seems pretty good.. If you want to rent a car it would cost you at least 70 usd and you'll need a lot of gas since Baalbeck is far from Beirut. Transportation would cost you about 100 usd without lunch. The tour seems reasonable. http://www.wilddiscovery.com.lb/pages.cfm?contentid=27

Wine in Lebanon is WAY better than Egypt , you can trust me on that one, but California's a tough one but it still competes with easelol, I would also advice you to try Arak but having in it on its own would be nasty so order it at a lebanese cuisine resturant with a bunch of lebanese dishes. Rent a car IF you dare driving on Lebanese roads, if your not brave enough rent a car and hire a guy/girl to drive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebanese_wine

It might pay you to hire a taxi for the day...it's not expensive & you get a tour guide for free ...while you're out that way deviate off the main road to see the remains of the Roman town of Anjaar... Here's some info re wineries... http://www.massaya.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beqaa_Valley
