How dangerous is Kenya?

(Africa) How dangerous is Kibera, Kenya Scale 1 to 10?

  • I want to go on a mission trip to Kibera, Kenya and everyone keeps telling me not to...that its too dangerous for me I understand that it is but I still want to go and try to make a difference I am a young blonde fair skinned white girl and people say that I am more likely to get kid napped and forced in to sex trafficking because of the way I look.........Is this true??? From a scale of 1 to 10 how dangerous is Kibera, Kenya??? What are some helpful precautions I can take??? I really want to go and work there and try to make it a better place so most likely whatever you say I am still going but I just want to be aware of what I am going to face.......and don't worry I am not leaving for another year so I will have plenty of time to educate myself more...which I will definitely do!!!

  • Answer:

Kibera is dangerous, no doubt, but there are places in Kibera that's as safe as beverly hills. I've been to Kibera so many times.... I have so many white friends who are doctors and nurses who work for NGO's (Non-Governmental Organizations) in KIBERA. They've never been mugged let alone touched. You just have to be prepared. How you where, where you go, who you go with, transportation...etc....if you have someone there, it's better ti asked those who work and have been there for a while...I myself am light skinned....I zig zag through Kibera all the time! It's just knowing where you're going and at what time...obviiously you can't walk around at night by yourself... My simple advice is....make sure you have someone there and they can lead the way...

Yes is true i have personaly have lived there for 12years (8-9) I do not mean this in any racist fashion but since your white you attract a lot of a attention I am not being racist because most people wont have seen i white person before. But little kids will ask you for money bring a lot of small change like 20 kenya shillings Always have a guide (a male). if you have any valuables expect to lose them kenya are renowned pickpockets. A lot of people will call you muzungu which means white person in swahili learn a few words NEVER DRIVER we use every part of the side walk road don't driver. Next the police force only want bribes basically they want you to pay them they dont really enforce the law. Take these precautions take a guide with you, keep a very colse watch on a valuables but expect to lose everything that you take. For a shop you can go to nakumat in places like westgat, ask some people that are kenya where the nearest one is. Kibera is in nairobi which is the capital city which has a nice international airport it is going to be very hot. Do not trust any taxi driver Kenyans are the woste driver in traffic (what i mean be traffic is it takes you 3 hr to go a route that would usually take 20 min) if you need a cab i would go with jim cab they i think have a place where you can book in the airport You should get the number before hand on the internet. Sorry for going on but you need to be prepared This will totally different it will seen like a different world but in general the people are really nice.
