Safari holiday or Volunteer work in kenya?
-
Ok so here's the deal i've recently been looking at safari holidays in kenya and well tonight a friend mentioned that he was doing volunteer work out somewhere and i was thinking well instead of paying like £3k-£4k for a safari holiday. I could go over for say 2 months and work with the local villages schools during the week and have the weekends to spend with the other volunteers. please don't say that i am only doing this because i want a cheep holiday as its still going to work out quite expensive as i am paying for flights and im paying for my accommodation on a weekly basis The main difference is i would be going over and giving something back to them instead of going there doing what i want to do and not giving anything back.. The only reason i am torn between the two is because my boyfriend was meant to be coming on the safari but he wont come with me if i volunteer... i have looked at it in the past and its really appealed to me. for those of you who cannot ever seem to give a answer without my life's into: im 18 finishing college in 2 weeks work part-time have the desire to travel your input would be greatly appreciated... thanks in advance

Answer:
American here. I don't and don't really know anyone who thinks they are the same place. Maybe its not that people think that they "are" the same place as much as they would consider them "in" the same place geographically speaking. But I am sure there are people out there who just don't have a clue and they are probably the same people who think Africa is a country. What i do know is this, mainstream media (nightly news / 24hrs news channels) in the United States is often very insular and really only covers events in foreign countries if there is a tragedy, controversial elections or other more sensational topics. This helps many Americans to be ignorant of the world.

Why don't you take a holiday out there first and see what you think. If you think you could stay there for a few months and work then go back out to do that. You might not like it and its a long way to go. I've been looking at a safari holiday to Kenya and there's some special offers at HolidaysInKenya.co.uk
