Safari & Beach Holidays to Kenya - Where, When and who with?

  • Thinking of visiting Kenya in 2009 combining a Safari and Beach holiday....any suggestions on good agents, accomodation, places to go, types of Safari and when is the best time to go

  • Answer:

Good choice! Kenya is an amazing country. I stayed at Bamburi Beach Hotel - it's a fantastic place to stay. The staff are so friendly and will do everything to make your stay an enjoyable one. You can book safaris at the hotel - they have Somak reps there every day/2 days . We booked a safari this way. We did 1 night/2 days at Tsavo East (about a 3 hour drive by Somak bus). We stayed in Voi Lodge, another lovely hotel. In terms of weather - avoid April to June (rainy season) and October/November (same reason) I was in Kenya in January/February this year and the temp is hot hot hot! If you prefer a self catering apartment I recommend Indiana Beach Apartment Hotel. This is where we stayed this year (and 4 other times before that) and it gives you the freedom to eat when you want etc. It also has a restaurant/bar where you can order food if you're just too chilled out to cook!

The best time to visit Kenya is from January to end of March, and then from September on . For accomodation you have a lot of choice to choose from, from a 5 star hotel to a bed and break fast, or even a room in private house, so that you can really test an african experience. For the safari choose a minimum of 2 days with 1 nights spent in a tented camp, it is a beautyfull experience that you will never forget.

I am from the UK, and have just got back from Kenya last week. I did 5 days Safari (Abedares, Naivasha and Masai Mara) followed by 10 days beach (Voyager Hotel) and without a doubt it was the best holiday I have had so far. Our tour operator was Cosmos, though locally they used Somak for the Safari. If you are feeling brave, then just book the hotel through your tour operator and book your safari seperately though a Kenyan safari company - Tripadvisor Kenya Forum is a mine of information If you go to the Mara on safari, then July - September is a good time to catch the migration (zebra / wildebeest), but any time of the year is good for the rest of the game on offer. The coast remains pretty much the same temperature all year round although April / May and November are the official rainy months. Saying that, this year the rains have gone on into July, there was a short shower on most days I was there which apparently is quite unusual Feel free to mail for any specific questions you may have

Safari and Beach holiday combination is definately a good idea. That way you get a better feel of what Kenya really has to offer. Well.....good agents are numerous and so are the bad ones. Good ones are the big guys like Abercrombie and Kent and Somak travels. Also read this story word for word about Kamvil, a tourist who had a bad stink with PLANET SAFARI agents .......avoid those ones at all costs....http://www.my-kenya-guide.com/african-safari-kenya-classic.html I wrote this article a while back on - "best time to visit Kenya". Have a read and get some ideas. http://ezinearticles.com/?African-Safari-Kenya---Know-The-Best-Time-to-Visit-Kenya&id=1056084

Go to http://www.africanmeccasafaris.com/ These guys operate from Penn. and have offices around East Africa, including Kenya. They are with you all along the way. What is great about them is that their services and locations are above the rest. They have so may other options apart from Bamburi Beach Hotel, which I think they consider mediocre. They truly make it a memorable vacation. With all the choices available, I would still choose them, hands down!!!. They are homegrown and know their African territory in and out. SN

The best time to go is April or August. You can book with private safaris for the safari and just rent an apartment on the coast for the beach holiday since its cheaper and you have the option of cooking. My boss has a cottage at the coast and i can give you his contacts if interested with the cottage
