The big city is the big city, noisy, overcrowded, hustle and bustle...but with lots to do and lots to see. Nairobi is one of the biggest cities in Africa and one of the biggest in the world, so one has the same things to do there as one would have in any big city (museums, plays, national zoo, central biz district, parks, government buildings, shopping, nightclubs, restaurants, etc). Just pick up a travel guide at BN or amazon. As for hotels, you've got your Hyatts, Mariotts, Hiltons, Intercontinental, Holiday Inn...etc. Pick one. Food- everything from traditional to burgers and fries. Kenyans have a sweet tooth so there's plenty of soda, candy, pastries, breads on just about any street corner. Small towns are another thing, lots to see (since you would be a foreigner), but life is at a slower pace, less noisy and cleaner. To get a feel for the locals, stop in a small coffee/tea shop, take a seat, and have a cup of tea and a scone, and start a conversation. Most people, like myself, are fluent in English. The rural areas are rural. Lots of green pastures, depending on where one goes, one would see lots of farm animals, people living a pastoral lifestyle. People live in "the country" just to get away from the hustle and bustle and the peering eyes of foreigners, so one wouldn't want to go touring rural areas without a specific invite. Africa is just like any place else in the world. Go figure.

OK first off sorry!! how are cities and rural areas different wherever it is you are from? good that's the difference we have in Kenya i.e agriculture in the rural areas and corporate families in cities like Nairobi and Mombasa. Just like in any city u can do lots in Nairobi, clubs, shopping blah blah blah the only difference is that in Nairobi you can go see wild animals at the orphanage unlike many other cities in the world. We have four star hotels in Nairobi and Mombasa, those in Mombasa are beach hotels tho'. I hope that answers your questions, if not just drop me a link!

Nairobi is a big city - 4 million inhabitants of which 2.5 million in the slums. Nairobi doesn't have the best reputation, but I like it. Most people are nice and polite, and it has great restaurants, hotels and night clubs. One major attraction in Nairobi is Nairobi National Park, which is just miles outside the city centre.
