Cheap & clean hotel needed in mombasa money tight, any suggetions?

Try a hostel. I stayed in one last year when I backpacked across Africa. They are cheap and usually not a bad place to stay (of course not compared to the Hilton, but the Hilton in Nairobi is too far from Mombasa...)

I think the best way is to get in touch with someone in Mombasa. My grandparents and cousins are kenyan portuguese who settled in Mombasa. I stayed in a couple of hotels in mombasa but it was better staying at cousins or relatives houses. If you have a tight budget get a hostel, or rent out a room from a wealthy family, most Europeans who settled on the coast and even the black Kenyans appreciate meeting people from overseas. There is also a really nice hotel beach acreage owned by this belgian family on shelly beach. Alot of missionaries come and stay there and its fairly cheap, but it doesnt accomodate food. decent hotels in mombasa would run about $50 a night, and really nice hotels can run to $500 a night.

I stayed in Daba City guest House in Mombasa for almost a week, its simple and a little noisy since it is right downtown but it has a cheap resturaunt right next door and the people running the place were nice. Plus since I barely had any money it was nice b/c it was only 500 KSh per night (about 6-7 US$).

The Shelley Beach Hotel, a couple of miles south of Likoni flats, where the ferry is. I've turned up there twice and got a room. That was ten years ago, so it might not be the same now. One thing that will not have changed is a desperate shortage of pens and pencils in the schools. If you can get your friends to sort out any that they do not want and take those with you, you will be welcomed warmly by a classroom of smiling infants. Mombasa has so much to offer in terms of accomodation needs. its best you state your budget so that you could get definite answers. To be of help, there's affordable accomodation available beginning from host family stay, own small house stay or cottages. Host stay are far much cheaper though you'll need to interract with your host. Own house stays are also available in different parts..you'll be surprised if you're offered a fully furnidhed house a price far much better than hotel accomodation with even better facilities to use.
