What is the best currency to take to Kenya?

Does anyone know what currency I should take to Kenya. US$ UK£ or Kenyan shillings?

  • I would also like to know how much you are charged for a visa at the airport and which currency they ask for it in.

  • Answer:

hi. you can take any "hard cash" currency you want to take. if you will try to buy K. shillings out of Kenya, it will cost you a lot! a tourist visa to all east African countries is $30. paid once at port of entry. (unless you need a visa from the Kenyan embassy in you country) a word of advise:do NOT flash bundle of money in full view in public places. do NOT change money in the street, even though they will offer you a "better exchange rate"

Take U.S. Dollars. Any hotel or bank can exchange money for you. Many times you can make better deals on purchases whith USD.

Visa was £30 ,but make sure immigration dont rip you off. They usually say they have no change.

You won't find any Kenya Shillings outside Kenya.

Don't take cash at all. Use an ATM with a debit card (don't forget to memorize the pin). It's always the best exchange rate. You can take money out a little at a time. If the card is stolen, you won't lose money. There's always an ATM near large banks. Not villages. Take it inside a Tasche bursta, a purse hanging around your neck and inside clothes.

Been living in Kenya for nearly 6 years. Travel alot so I suggest dont get your visa at the airport, And some of the guys have visa issues making it long and slow....poor people after a long flight, they look tired I always feel sorry for them passing through passport control. Dont exchange at the airport or hotels Take US$ , best places to go to is Sarit or Yaja shopping centres. Karen Connections in Karen Nairobi.Ask for the best exchange rate which you normally get . Other places see you as a mizungu (white) money money ATM dont always take international debitcards, and as I experience you out of money but cannot draw any because the international lines are down. So you have to borrow.

Yo can take U$D & convert it in to Kenyan Shilling in the airport. They charge U$D 50 for 3 months tourist visa in the airport. Be careful. Happy safairing

Take them all! And it depends on how many US$ you can afford at the airport (i.e. hide most of your cash).
