Is travel to Kenya safe?

Is it safe to travel to kenya?

  • I am planning a trip there in August

  • Answer:

Hi, Kenya is a relatively stable East African country. However, it can have troubles and you would be best guided by your travel agent and the australian government website. As trouble can flare up and go away at short notice, I would not worry too much about what is happening at the moment. Plan your holiday (with insurance) and just be prepared that you may have to cancel or change at the last minute. When I went to East Africa we met some English nurses who were in Nairobi for a course - they were probihited by their employer of returning to their jobs for a week or so due to unrest. However, there was no issue in Nairobi. As with any country you have to be sensitive to that particlar country. When we were in Nairobi we were told not to leave the Hotel etc at night. When we did go out of the hotel - the doormen arranged the taxis and we got straight in. Also we were told not to walk to certain places but use taxis. Other places we just took care and kept money belts etc hidden and never went alone. Lots of places have high walls, and guards. It also varies - in Dodoma in Tanzania we were told to take a flashlight to watch out for the potholes at night. So in short - yes it safe. Just be aware that it may change at a moments notice. And always take care and listen to the locals. Enjoy it is a beautiful country - the people are great and wildlife fantastic. (On a separate note - don't support the beggars or children by handing out coins you only encourage them. Give the money to an organisation that works with the poort and direct the truly needy to that organisation. My understanding is that the government also encourages this approach.) In terms of health - make sure you get your vaccinations and determine the right malaria treatment for you.

no, This Advice was last issued on Monday, 06 February 2012. It contains new information in the Summary and under Safety and security: Terrorism (four people were arrested in Mombasa on charges relating to an alleged bomb plot in December 2011). The overall level of the advice for Kenya has not changed.

No. Always travel with a group. Do NOT go out at night in cities. Bring a hat and plenty of sunscreen and insect repellant. Be prepared to change shirts often during the day as they tend to get soaked with perspiration.

Probably not. There are a ton of mosquitoes that carry malaria, and your body will not be very resistant to the bacteria and viruses. But if you really want to go, I suggest you use bug spray, and bring plenty of bottled water.

Yes it is safe to travel to Kenya. Just dress casually. Don't carry a lot of cash and valuables. Don't walk at night. If you wanna venture out at night use a taxi (cab).
