How did Jews get to Israel?

How do Jews feel about black converts? Will I get discriminated against in Israel?

  • Answer:

What another poster said about acceptance in Israel is absolutely true. More important than color is method of conversion. Only Orthodox conversions are accepted; if you come as a Jew under a different conversion, neither the state nor the populace will recognize you as such. Being black will not affect your immigration success in any appreciable way. Israel has no history of color discrimination; to the contrary, Israel air-lifted the Ethiopians to the safety of Israel without a thought to skin color. This is especially true among the religious community (assuming you've had a religious conversion). Most will probably admire you for successfully completeing conversion, which is a difficult process.

Hate to be the party pooper, but I 've been involved with ppl contemplating moving here for years... and I like to see ppl succeed and make it, rather than leave angry, defeated by the "system" and having their dreams shattered....that said... Honestly, it will depend on a few factors... (and I base this on experience with just under a dozen separate, unconnected black olim): 1. Was your conversion orthodox? If so, and you are fully into observance, you'll be very readily welcomed by a lot of circles, and especially the circles that probably mean the most to you. 2. Friendly advice - Like any newcomer, regardless of color or whatever, if you come with a chip on your shoulder, you'll find plenty of ppl here to try and knock it off. Assuming that's not your goal, try to leave the chip (if there ever was one) in your "left behind" stuff. :) 3. Age will make a difference too. If you're under 30 or 35, you'll have an easier time getting into things here, like any other immigrant. Older than that, it will depend on your flexibility, outlook, and willpower. 4. Read the book "the Bamboo Cradle".... read between the lines, and it should be a fantastic guide for you. 5. Finally, forgive me, but if you are a black hebrew, and not really converted to Judaism by recognized Torah authorities, we don't need more of such people. I'm far from a racist, had blacks as my friends since early teens, but missionaries and people out to pervert Judaism don't belong here. I hope that's not your path. 6. Finally.. the most important issue - do you like falaffel? :)))

jews welcome converts, so dont worry. there is also a large ethiopean population in israel, so seeing a black jew doesnt really shock most people.

no, because you are Jewish. All Jews look differently, but in Israel that is the one uniting factor. This is not to say that there is not discrimination in gov't--- which is mainly dominated by ashkenazim (I hope this can change). I'm Ashkenazi and I have a Jewish friend who is black (origins in Ethiopia). We studied together at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and she was the only black student in our "junior year abroad" program (although NOT the only Jew on campus, the others were just Israeli..). I asked her if she ever felt discriminated against and she said no, that she felt completely welcome as she was surrounded by fellow jews :) I hope you find this helpful, and good luck.

Not at all! :)

No, don't worry about that. Besides, don't forget in Israel people come in all colours, shapes and sizes!!! A wonderful, colourful mixture!

Racism is in every country in every part of the world, sadly. But to answer your question , you may like to check out this website, it is from a newspaper in Israel. Peace to you!

Wake up Jesus was black and Jewish so was moses. Israel and Africa were connected you could walk from one place to another back at their time. No not ever will that happen to you in Israel. Other parts of the middle east probably yes
