Why is Arabic an official language in Israel?

Do the Jews in Israel grow up speaking both Hebrew AND Arabic? Is Arabic required 2 b taught as 2nd language?

  • Or do the Jewish citizens get the choice to not have to learn it in school? And is there a major language barrier between the Arabs and Jews in the country? ...Or are the 2 languages similar enough in a way that makes it somewhat easy for them to understand each other even if they're not fluent in the other language?

  • Answer:

They speak 2 languages The Devils language and Satans language

Most people don't know but Israel has two national languages: Hebrew and Arabic. Most of the Arab children attend schools where Arabic and sometimes Hebrew are taught (all Arab schools). The Jewish (others as well including some Arab children) attend schools where Hebrew and English are mandatory. After this they must study either French or Arabic. Also in the I.D.F. training, all soldiers must learn some Arabic before they can pass their course due to the conflict in this region with the Arabic speaking world. Arabs living in Israel usually speak Arabic and Hebrew but some (predominately women, but many men as well) speak only Arabic. The Palestinians in the West Bank that hold work visas and travel into Israel oftentimes speak almost fluent Hebrew simply from working here. The rest of the Palestinians (West Bank and Gaza) generally speak only Arabic (but a lot learn English or another language such as French as well) As an Israeli, I speak Hebrew, English, and a little Spanish. But from my work (I work as a medic on Ambulances, Magen David Adom. So a large majority of my patients are non-Hebrew speakers) and from hearing other languages all the time I have come to understand a lot of Russian and Arabic. All road signs in Israel are in Hebrew and Arabic and a large majority are also in English.

Israeli Jews generally do not speak Arabic, though they are required to learn a basic knowledge of Arabic and Arabic culture for a few years in school. Most Israelis learn English in school and many of them speak it well, especially in the cities (Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv.) In the more rural regions such as Galilee only Hebrew is spoken; in Hasidic communities the native language is Yiddish. Many Israeli Arabs, such as those who reside in East Jerusalem or other Israeli Arab communities throughout the country, do speak Hebrew, but not all. Palestinian Arabs, especially those in Gaza, generally speak only Arabic and do not speak Hebrew, so there is a language barrier there. The two languages are similar as in they come from the same sub-family, the Semitic family, but they are not mutually intelligible. There are similar words between the languages but a Hebrew speaker would have to learn Arabic and vice versa. Think of it like English and Spanish, where there are similar words between the two languages (though the percentage of similarity between Hebrew and Arabic is a lot higher than English and Spanish) but a speaker of one cannot understand the other.

In school first Hebrew, than English, latter on you can chose between Arabic & French. Most people I talked to could speak Hebrew and english and though I don't speak it I heard many talking Arabic.

Arab is one of the official languages of the State of Israel. Students take Hebrew, Arabic, and English in school. Arabic is mandatory, something I don't agree with.

Most Israeli Jews do not speak Arabic, some might understand from what they know from school. The same goes for the Israeli Arab kids,(but the opposite) The Israeli kids know English better then they know Arabic.

No, the jews in Israel are probably more likely to speak English then Arabic. I'm not sure whether the Arabs speak Hebrew. The signs are generally in both (and Russian sometimes). They are definitely not similar enough for a Hebrew speaker to understand.
