How do the environmental problems of Mono Lake and the Aral Sea differ?

Lake Baykal/Aral Sea?

  • What is causing the environmental degradation of Lake Baykal and the Aral Sea, and what can be done about it?

  • Answer:

Lake Baykal was in danger some 10 years ago when there was a plan to build a paper factory on its banks. Then the project was cancelled and now Baykal is ok. Aral Sea. Practically nothing can be done about it. Its main problem is not the pollution; it´s simply going dry due the generally hotter climate.

Other answers

Lake Baikal is in Siberia and is remarkably unpolluted although a cellulose plant discharges a lot of waste into it. The Aral sea has virtually dried up due to cotton growing. Neither are in Israel although Lake Baikal's water would be most welcome as water is a rapidly disappearing resource in Israel.

Industrial agricultural processes are to blame for the degradation of the environment in these regions.

It might be pollution, those seas are not near Israel
