Will my degree from a US university (BA Spanish) be recognized when I make aliyah? Should I get another one?
-
I am planning to move to Israel in about 10 years. I have a BA in Spanish. Will this be recognized in Israel? I know in a lot of cases in the USA outside universities are not recognized, therefore the immigrant's degree is unfortuneately worthless here. Should I get another degree before I go? Maybe in Business or Nursing? What are the in demand jobs there?

Answer:
As you are planning to stay overseas anyway, it would be wise to add further qualifications to your resume. The degrees and transcripts from the US must be submitted to the Education Ministry for approval as to their authenticity; this should not be a problem. Generally, the BA in Spanish alone is not going to give you an edge in the Israeli market (unless you just happen to stumble upon the right job at the right time.) If an employer actually needs a Spanish speaker, s/he can hire a native speaker of the language from whatever country is relevant. On the other hand, combining the language degree with another field is a great idea! Business in combination with your BA is a practical thought. (But, if you think you'll be happier in nursing, go for that; there's usually plenty of work available if you're qualified.) Take into account where you want to live. For example, there are more corporate opportunities in the center of the country, while nursing is needed all over (hospitals, kupot cholim, & homes for the aged). Have you considered acquiring teaching certification? That gives you the option to teach Spanish, and could lead to a career. There are several high schools for teens from overseas that hire part-time Spanish teachers as a regular part of the curriculum. (Two of the schools are in the Jerusalem area, and one is in the center of the country. Similar programs in the north and the south may do likewise. ) With further studies, you could teach in universities, too. In addition, people who want or need to learn the language are more likely to hire you to teach privately if you have teaching qualifications. Above all, as the time for your aliya draws nearer, there are many appropriate on-line lists that you could join. Behatzlaja! Good luck! Buena Suerte.

You will need to give your degree certificate and academic transcript (a listing of all your individual grade scores provided by the University) to the Education Ministry (Misrad HaHinooch) in order to get your degree recognised by Israel. It is one of the pieces of bureaucracy that takes the longest to process - it can take six months or even a year - but as you have quite a lot of time before your aliyah perhaps you'll be able to get it sorted in advance. The Israeli economy is in quite good shape right now, so the job market isn't too bad. But Israelis are smart and generally have good qualifications, so the competition is quite strong. Specialist knowledge or experience working abroad will be good for making you stand out, and will probably be more useful to you than your BA in Spanish. Business and nursing are both desirable qualifications out here, but whatever it is you choose, you'll probably need to be prepared for a salary cut, as many jobs pay roughly a third of what they would in the US. The highest-demand and best-paid jobs are in the high-tech sector, so if you can get into that you'll do very nicely. But whatever you do, don't try to be a lawyer here - there is a massive surplus of them in Israel so many fully-qualified lawyers get stuck on minimum wage...

Saff, please permit me to answer this question for you. Any grades that you received from any major University like S.D.S.U. or U.C.S.D. will be definitely accepted provided that you go to the Embassy of Israel and of them authenticated so when you do go to Israel, all you need to is go to directly to Education Minister where he will stamp all of the transcripts that you provide to him and with that you can enter any Israeli University that there is in Israel. Had this option been available, back in the 1980's, one thing is for sure I would have had to study extremely hard to in order to go to Israel to finish my studies.

Of course your Western studies will be recognized in Israel provided that you get your transcripts authenticated by the Israeli Embassy that is closest to where you do live and just one word of advice: Because you have a BA in Spanish, may I highly recommend that continue with it and don't forget that if an AA or a BA in Business Administration or even a Masters in it, you will definitely land a job. Please keep in mind that most employers will contact your professors in Israel so if you get pure A's you will have people asking you to work for their company.

If its an accredited University, it will be recognized. Another degree simply depends on what you want to do when you get to Israel.
