Who was the winner in the 1973 war between Egypt/Syria/Jordan/Iraq on one side - and Israel?
-
I read some very strange comments by Egyptians and other Arabs who say Egypt,Syria, Jordan and Iraq defeated Israel in the Yom Kippur war. I can not understand why they say it and thought maybe there are things I do not know? So, I just ask Arabs to answer some questions. Please, abstain those who have nothing to say but "we won the war, period" or "my grandpa told me". 1. Is it true that on the day the Armistice was signed the Israeli tanks were just a hundred kms from Cairo with no Egyptian forces in front of them? With an average speed of 40 kms/hour, it means just 3 hours tank march. 2. Is it true that by the end of the war, the Israelis had occupied 1,600 square kilometers of the Egyptian territory west of the Suez Canal while Egyptian forces were not occupying a single square meter of the territory of Israel? 3. Is it true that Arabs lost 18,000 dead, 35,000 wounded and 8,783 arab soliers were taken Prisoners, while Israel lost 2,800 dead, 8,800 wounded and 293 taken prisoners? 4. Is it true that after the war of 1973, Israel went on occupying Sinai for 7 years and Egypt never again did any attempt to get it back by force? 5. Is it true that Egypt got Sinai only in 1979, when Anvar Saddat went to Israel and offered the peace treaty in exchange for Sinai? If all this is true, then with all my respect, but Egypt was completely defeated and all the talks about how you won the Yom Kippur war are just a childish bragging.

Answer:
"1. Is it true that on the day the Armistice was signed the Israeli tanks were just a hundred kms from Cairo with no Egyptian forces in front of them? With an average speed of 40 kms/hour, it means just 3 hours tank march". Yes, it is true. "2. Is it true that by the end of the war, the Israelis had occupied 1,600 square kilometers of the Egyptian territory west of the Suez Canal while Egyptian forces were not occupying a single square meter of the territory of Israel?" Yes, it is true. "3. Is it true that Arabs lost 18,000 dead, 35,000 wounded and 8,783 arab soliers were taken Prisoners, while Israel lost 2,800 dead, 8,800 wounded and 293 taken prisoners?" Absolutely right. "4. Is it true that after the war of 1973, Israel went on occupying Sinai for 7 years and Egypt never again did any attempt to get it back by force?" Correct. "5. Is it true that Egypt got Sinai only in 1979, when Anvar Saddat went to Israel and offered the peace treaty in exchange for Sinai?" It is, again, true. "If all this is true, then with all my respect, but Egypt was completely defeated and all the talks about how you won the Yom Kippur war are just a childish bragging". You´ve made the only possible conclusion from the premises. Yes, arabs are telling stories about how they "defeated" Israel just because recognizing the truth would be too hurting for their national pride.

and you notice that none of them has answered your question. you have to understand the arab mentality and culture... it is all about keeping face. meaning that it doesnt matter what lies you tell as long as you appear to have won something, or are better at something, or have more of something. to the arabs who might read this, i have a suggestion. i know you wont believe any of us pro israelis who write about what happened, and i know your governments and elders have told you things... but how about reading a history book... that is not written by either and arab or an israeli to find out the truth.

If Israel had lost the 1973 War then it would not still be in existence. Your facts are totally correct as is your conclusion.

1.True 2.True 3.True 4.True 5.True Arabs claiming Egypt won are often Egyptians themselves who have soaked the idea of victory from early age both at school and from the media. This is seen in egypt in many ways: 1. Egypt has national holiday celebrating the "victory". 2. Calling it the "october war" (ignoring the fact it was a most holy israeli holiday) 3. Tend to emphasize the very early stages of the war, the attack of the "Bar-Lev line". often referring to the war with the paraphrase "the six hours war". 4. Holding the gain of Sinai as a "proof" of winning. Which actually, as you correctly noted, occurred in a completely different time period. 5. Emphasize american aid to Israel while ignoring the very extensive arab and Soviet aid to Egypt. As already said by other answers, this is simply a defense mechanism, an attempt to keep the national pride and moral. This kind of "self propaganda" is in fact a natural behavior of any non-democratic country who loses an engagement. Egypt is not an exception.

Arab/muslims will never admit that they lost a war. To them, it is still the 7th century and they think they rule the world. Of course they lost to Israel everytime, that's why theyturned to the genocide card with the Fakestinians, they can't last in a real war

To answer that question you must first go back to basics. What exactly does it mean to "win a war"? Well, here is a good definition. "Winning a war is when you succeed in achieving your goals via military actions". So, the next question is: "What were Egypt's goals in attacking Israel in 1973?" Well, its stated goal was to capture the Sinai. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN. Therefore, in conclusion, Egypt did NOT WIN. Now, some people who are a bit obtuse about it try to point out that Egypt got back the Sinai in the 1979 accords. But again, this was the result of peace negotiations, NOT the result of Egypt winning a war.

Oh, come on, you can´t be serious! Of course Israel beat the arabs up in the Yom Kippur war - as well as in all hte other wrs Arabs started. It´s a fact known to anyone. Curious, you really made me laugh with your advice to arabs " how about reading a history book". First of all, 40% of the population in muslim arab countries are illiterate. Second, of those who can read, over 50% are functionally illiterate, i.e. they can read the text but are unable to understand its meaning. And third, in order to make those who can read and more or less successfully understand the text read something you will have to win another Yom Kippur war. Arabs do not like reading and very seldom do it. They are not "The People of the Book".

Israel won the war 1. true 2. true 3. true 4. true, Egypt got it back through the 1979 Peace Accords betwen Menachim Begin, Anwar Sadat and Jimmy Carter at Camp David 5 true I have no idea where the claims that Egypt and Syria won that war came from. Perhaps some ridiculous Arab propaganda All about the Yom Kippur War http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yom_Kippur_War The Arabs did indeed fight well, you must give them that. But the Israelis fought even better, had better training, better equipment and better leadership.
