Answer:
From the Old Testament it seems that within Israel itself the surest and most common form of transport was on foot. There are numerous refrences to sending out 'runners', as well as the concept of Aliyah b'Regel (lit. Pilgramage on Foot). Stirrup technology was not yet developed and horses were not native to Israel, so they most probably were not common transportation animals. What horses there were were mostly owned by the crown and used for chariot warfare. Due to some ambiguity it is also possible that the elite had horse-drawn carriages, but this would not have been a common form of transport. To the best of my knowledge, donkies were used only for cargo and carrying burdens, but not so much people. Camels were useless for the most part, as they are worthwhile only in the desert, of which most of Israel was not. The interior of Israel is mountainous, not fit for camel use or really any riding animal. As a last point, 500 BCE is not so ancient. The founding of the Jewish Kingdoms began in about 1000 BCE with King David and before him King Saul. This after a couple hundred years of tribal set up. In fact, 500 BCE is actually the second Kingdom, the first having been defeated in 586 BCE by the Babylonians.

You don't know how it pains me to agree with Ultra mouth on anything, but a little common sense would be nice.
