Why is the PA banning journalists from reporting human rights abuses?

Palestinian journalists say PA is forbidding to publicize findings of ICHR report on torture, arrests, arbitrary detentions by PA, Hamas. The Palestinian Authority has banned Palestinian journalists from reporting about the findings of The Independent Commission for Human Rights [ICHR] concerning abuse of human rights by the PA and Hamas. In its last annual report, ICHR said that Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip were subjected last year to an “almost systematic campaign” of human rights abuses by the PA and Hamas, as well as Israeli authorities. According to the report, security forces belonging to the PA and Hamas were responsible for torture, arrests and arbitrary detentions. Palestinian journalists complained that the PA leadership issued instructions to their editors forbidding them from reporting about the findings of the report. “We were surprised that all the newspapers and news web sites refused to run stories about the human rights group’s report,” said one journalist. He said that the PA justified its decision by arguing that it did not want to jeopardize the Egyptian-brokered reconciliation accord between Fatah and Hamas. Journalist Mustafa Ibrahim pointed out that the decision to ban PA-affiliated media outlets from covering the story about the report was in the context of violations and assaults against freedom of media and journalists in the West Bank. “Assaults on journalists and censorship and restrictions on freedom of expression are still a dreadful nightmare for the journalists,” he said. “Journalists avoid covering events out of fear of being targeted or arrested by [Palestinian] security forces in the West Bank.” Mustafa said that many journalists were assaulted “physically and morally” and had their cameras destroyed and confiscated by members of the PA security forces while carrying out their duties. I thought Hamas and Fatah were perfect and that Israel is the "rogue state"? How do you explain this?

Answer:
that's because the west cant' judge islam and arabs based on western standards. at least that is what prof. Edward Said says in his book Orientalism. in islam it is ok to torture, rape, have sex with minors, mutilate women, amputate people and so on. so there is nothing to report.

I always find it ironic that Israel gets the most flak from the media for being the "least friendly towards journalists". Considering that it's not that much of a liability to speak out against Israel in Israel, whereas such isn't true elsewhere, I challenge many of those who can only say such because the country is free to go elsewhere. Try Syria, which is doing it's best to try to hide it's problems and controlling the media. But, Israel is subject to many other double standards, sadly enough. The PA isn't perfect, but they paint themselves as such to win sympathy. Hamas knows that, despite however satanic they might be, they still have dopes on the outside who'll support them. I maintain a strong belief that any Palestinian who prefers Hamas is a sadist and/or a masochist who secretly hates himself or herself and his/her people. Even if they know things will get out, they still want to hold as good of a reputation as possible, so they do their best to make sure they look good. Influencing the media is just one way.

Your question sounds a little biased but to answer this most countries have laws that block the media from filming certain things. China is big on it. So are a lot of other nations.. so is the PA. Media is used as the palestinian authority as a weapon of popular sympathy. If they allow the negative things that are going on to air, it will hurt their position in global politics.

I was fascinated by a Palestinian journalist who says the same thing. He works for Jerusalem Post, which is only reason he CAN say it...and keep his life. http://www.meforum.org/604/telling-the-truth-about-the-palestinians http://www.hudson-ny.org/921/what-does-pro-palestinian-really-mean http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/features/journalist-says-only-truth-will-set-palestine-free/story-e6frg6z6-1225866997079 "Conclusion -People in the rest of the world therefore do not get an accurate picture of what happens in the region, and there are two parties to blame for this journalistic failure. Partly to blame are foreign journalists who allow themselves to be misled by some of their Palestinian consultants. The bulk of the blame, however, rests with the PA, whose tyrannical approach and control of the media creates an atmosphere of intimidation and fear among Palestinian journalists."

Hamas abuses are well known, however what the PA and Fatah don't want people to know is that their security forces are detaining people at the behest of the IDF. But there are legitimate concerns in both the West Bank and especially Gaza. Foreign observers must be allowed more access into the occupied territories. Torture and unjust dentention should not be tolerated whether by Israel, the PA or Hamas. The PA tries to justify this as the only deterrent to terrorism in order to ensure peace with Israel and hopefully a final negotiation, or they just deny it happens.
