Why are Hebrew tattoos so popular?

Why are Hebrew tattoos so popular?

  • especially among those who don't know Hebrew?

  • Answer:

The Hebrew language is a holy language for many, particularly Christians who recognize the Hebraic roots of the religion, and of course for Jews. It's also a set of not commonly seen characters that are individualistic, sharp, bold, and of course interesting to look at. Thus, many people who like foreign characters gravitate towards Hebrew because it both looks cool and can have a religious connection. At least that's my take on it.

Other answers

A preliminary question is: why do people tattoo themselves? The answer: because they are shallow (that's the bottom line; the answer can be written in length). So, why is Hebrew/Japanese tattooing popular? Answer: because people are shallow. They don't know any "profound" idea, and refusing to accept that nothing "profound" exists, or that they can't "get" it, they hand the responsibility to somebody else: some language/culture they don't know. Not knowing it helps them believe "some 'profound' thing exists somewhere; and I have it on my skin, and like rappers say: 'look and listen!', 'respect!', whatever that is." BTW, I get the impression they don't mind if the Hebrew is wrong, or if it's tattooed backwards. It amazes me how people ask for Hebrew translations here and then, without verifying what people tell them, they quickly run to the tatooer. What disgusts me even more is intelligent people here who answer their questions. It's like helping a sick person do something unhealthy, helping him to sink further in his sickness. Like helping a man jump from the bridge. These intelligent people --who must have very, very cold heart to be able to do this-- seemingly don't have the excuse of "shallowness", so why *are* they doing this? Mere vanity?

I agree with Merc for the most part. Except getting a tattoo, doesn't make someone "sick". You can't possibly compare that to someone about to commit suicide off a bridge.

My guess: Because the old testament is very popular and most of it is originally in Hebrew.

blue bird

i dont know. its just like when people get Chinese tattoos - because it looks foreign and cool. its kinda ironic though because in Judaism it is forbidden to get a tattoo

Chani M

I don't think they are popular. If you google Chinese tatoo and jewish tatoo, you'll get a billion hits on Chinese and 1 or 2 in jewish. I would call that "popular" if I were a Jew like you. But I am not, so bye bye

Beautiful Sunset

It's like tattoos in chinese, its just popular. people appreciate the hebrew language
