How do I gain a Croatian Citizenship?

Can a Reform Jew gain Israeli citizenship through Law of Return?

  • I'm a convert Reform Jew about to attend a 4 year university in the United States. After getting my bachelors degree i'd like to immigrate to Israel through the Law of Return. I've heard alot of conflicting statements about who exactly can gain citizenship through the Law of Return. Some say that only Orthodox Jews can get it, while some people have told me that all Jewish sub-divisions can gain citizenship through the Law of Return. So can I(a Reform Convert) gain citizenship through the Law of Return? It will be four years before I graduate from college so it will be a while. Oh and on a side note: I'm insulin dependent diabetic, but I've always wanted a career in law enforcement. Would it be possible to serve in either the Israeli Border Guard or the Israeli National Police? I highly doubt it, but would it be remotely possible to serve in the Israeli Navy in any capacity? Thanks alot.

The simple answer is yes. As a Jew, ANY kind of Jew, the Law of Return applies to you. I at least know I'm eligible for the Law of Return and I'm Conservative Jewish, so at least that dispels your "Orthodox Jews only" myth. But Converts = Jews in Judaism, so you just need to be recognized as a Jew by a Rabbi, Reform ones included. Now, the confusion lies in the fact that you won't be recognized as a Jew by the Orthodox Rabbinate. Normally, you would care less about what the Rabbinate thinks, as your relationship with G-d is not dependent on them. However, your marital status in Israel is; or, rather, your ability to marry in Israel. Unfortunately, when you meet that special someone, your options right now are to marry abroad or just become common law. If you marry abroad, then Israel will recognize your marriage, since they recognize all marriages (even gay ones) that are done abroad. To tell you the truth, most Israelis will recognize you as a Jew. So it's that detail that really is irksome; however, it has no bearing on your Law of Return ability. Just contact the agency for further details. As for the insulin issue: I really don't know; however, I would imagine that, if you can arrange it not to affect your work, then you should be fine. I'd contact the Israeli agencies about that one for specific details, and the protocols you'll have to go through in order to join. As for the Navy: Once again, I don't know, but there should be many openings in the Navy, Insulin dependent or no. I'd imagine that office work doesn't interfere with it, but I'm sure that it can be arranged to do something more in the field.

The law of return recognises all conversions from Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism for the purposes of the law of return. However, in the case of all conversions, there is a two year waiting period from when the conversion was completed. As for your insulin dependence, your best bet is to contact the relevant service branches and ask them. Generally controlled diabetes is not an issue, uncontrolled diabetes could be an issue as it could result in fits or blackouts whent he person is on duty and thus means they cannot perform their duties properly.

No problem. You can make Aliyah, as the Law of Return stands now (the orthodox want to change it), you can work and pay taxes, and if you are of age and fit, you can serve in the armed forces. Hope to see you here, we need more people like you!

'Orthodox Jews do not recognize conversions performed by Reform or Conservative Judaism. However, the Law provides that any Jew regardless of affiliation may migrate to Israel and claim citizenship.'
