What is philosophy?

What's the difference between Greek-Roman philosophy and Chinese philosophy?

  • Western, American and European culture and philosophy revolves solely around the Greeco-Roman culture/philosophy and is the foundation of the West. You have Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, a bunch of other ancient-classical Greek thinkers, the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment people. Then you have the ancient Chinese culture and philosophy. A lot less known in the world..but you have people like Confucius.

  • Answer:

I prefer Chinese philosophy. It's more rational and in touch with the real world.

Greek philosophy (basis of Western thought) is dealing with notions such as the supreme good, the supreme beauty and the supreme truth (being mostly unpractical), while the Chinese one usually deals with how to behave in a virtuous way (being mostly practical). The East was not lucky to have a good cooperation between its cultures which made the West strong and the East less so. The West civilization is a blend of Greek philosophy, Hebrew spirituality and Egyptian technology (I am talking about a paradigm here, not all the influences). Greek philosophy applied to Hebrew spirituality gave theology, again Greek philosophy applied to Egyptian technology gave science. Chinese technology, Indian philosophy and Arab spirituality failed to meld in the way. I hope my explanation helped :)
