Question. If you were a government employee hiring candidates, would you hire the 22 year old American with a 4 bachelors degree in International relations? Or would you hire the 24 year old who lived in the middle east for a few years and studied within the walls where the conflict is most prevalent? Studying MES masters in the Middle East has its ups and downs. Of course for one, Their is a difference between looking at the Golden Dome in a book, and actually touching it. The MES studies at Tel Aviv is small and new, so they do not have as many courses as say Georgetown. Tel Aviv also lacks guest speakers compared to Georgetown or Harvard. But Tel Aviv or Hebrew does offer certain courses that are not taught in the States. So its a sitting on the fence decision. If you want to learn arabic, Georgetown is ideal. If you want to learn Hebrew, Israel is Ideal. Remember, Israel has one of the best military forces in the world and the best intelligence in the world. It has too be or it would be destroyed then ext day. Their is no better country to learn about terrorism than a country that deals with it everyday. There is a difference when you watch American media about a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv and actually being in the city to experience how it effects the surroundings and how Israelis deal with the stress. Thousands of people apply for counter terrorism positions. They want more than just a degree about international relations. They want living abroad experience. They want candidates that been to these countries, not read about them in a book. How are you going to separate yourself from the rest of the pile? Hope I helped.

I wouldn't think that you would be hurt by a Middle Eastern Studies master from an Israeli University. Actually, I think it would help a lot. You never say which country you would get this job in, so I'm assuming it's not in a Middle Eastern Country. If that is the case, then most likely they would find you attractive for a multitude of reasons. For starters, most of the universities in Israel are ranked reasonably well on the world's scale. Thus, I would assume that they would at least respect the institution that you studied at, and respect that you did enough work for them to at least take them seriously. There is also Israel's unique position in the Middle East. It's situated there geographically, but it's more resembling of a Western State. Nonetheless, the State of Israel must account for the Middle Eastern atmosphere in a variety of ways: Politically, Socially, Economically, Defensively, the list can go on. A prospective employer might recognize that the Israeli study of the Middle East might teach a different prospective and thus be useful to his or her department. Don't forget the language requirement that possibly comes along with it. Most of these departments are looking for speakers of Arabic. That is the truth, without getting into many politics about that. There is also the possibility they are looking for another person who can do Hebrew, but I doubt it's likely you'll find that job. The MES masters could help you not only translate but listen for details, or make your training in such easier, in a Counter Terrorism or Political Analysis job. There are many other reasons, but I doubt that you will find much troubles because it's from Israel, at least.
