Why do most people live near Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in Israel?

    few reasons: a. the country is small. smaller than new jersey, so everything is close. b. work - most of the companies are near Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa. so people choose to live close to their work place. (Jerusalem and Haifa are only 80km from Tel-Aviv). c. culture - theaters, museums, and other cultural attractions exists mainly in the big cities. if you'll examine the wold, you'll see that urbanization is common everywhere. even in china people are moving from the country side to the cities.

Beer Sheva, in the heart of the desert is becoming increasingly popular (and expensive!) with companies setting up there and transportation improving. Had things been that good when I studied at the university (Beer Sheva has a fine university, hospital, repertory theatre and chamber music orchestra) I never would have left. Haifa is very popular, too, especially for high-tech types -- the Technion is one of the world's top schools of technology. I'm in Tel Aviv because I have a job there, it is Israel's most gay friendly and non-driver friendly city. Many (most?) people who prefer Jerusalem prefer it for religious reasons, although it has a surprising amount of modern and secular culture, too.
