Which is older, the Arabic language or the Hebrew language?

Israelis: When you speak Hebrew in public outside of Israel do people recognize the language?

  • Israelis, do you find that when you're outside of Israel people can recognize the Hebrew language being spoken or not? When you speak Hebrew in public outside of Israel (assuming you are just around random people). Does anyone ever ask you what language you're speaking? When I'm in the U.S. and I speak Hebrew in public people sometimes give me dirty looks or just stare sometimes, so I wonder if they recognize the language or not.

  • Answer:

A friend of mine had a funny story on this topic. He and his friend were on an airport terminal, talking Hebrew, and a Texan-cowboy-style man approached them and asked - "This French you're speaking - is it Canadian French? or French French?" (of course, they answered "French-French", and he said "Hmm, I thought so"). From my personal experience, one English guy has mistaken Hebrew for Farsi.

Me, yes i can since am familiar with hebrew. however there are many things that can make an Israeli easily identified. 1. The abnormal sized nose. 2. Forehead bruises due to bang bang with Western wall. 3. He will never buy a Candy that cost 1$ for his daughter even if she cries, keeping in mind that he has 10,000$ in his pocket.

well i certainly do but i have been learning hebrew in australia since i was five so maybe that doesn't count. Most people will assume that it is either hebrew or arabic or turkish etc.... Often people aren't educated enough to know what hebrew sounds like and by them giving you dirty looks only embarrasses them as it shows how uneducated they are :) an example of people being uneducated in haute coture. firstly you clearly don't know enough about the jewish culture to know that firstly not all jews have big noses and secondly not all jews are stingy. A word of advice, stop emabrassing yourself by saying these types of comments with no proof to back it up. Most of the jews i know are such charitable people, much less stingy then the non jews i know. Just because they are wise with the way they spend their money and use their brains to get a good job does not mean they are stingy. Judaism is a religion based on giving. It teaches selflessness and how to b charitable. A true jew isn't stingy. And lastly, your comment about the war was not right. Why aren't you looking at the reason for the wall? Why can't you see that the fact the israelis need to build a wall to keep terrorists from killing their children is sad! i reccomend knowing the facts in future.

I'm an American and I know how Hebrew sounds like. I know how it sounds like because I'm fascinated with the language. I'm fascinated because it was once a "dead" language that wasn't spoken in daily life but now it's revived and spoken daily by millions of people Well, some people don't know how Hebrew sounds like mainly because they've never been exposed to the language Off topic but I have a British friend who has a British accent (of course) but some people always say "You have a cute accent. Is it Australian?"

No ,they don´t. But they understand you are speaking some Oriental language, and think you are Arab, this is where these "dirty looks" come from. It happened to me many times in Europe, when people were listening to how I speak in Hebrew with my firends, and then asked , if wespoke Arabic( more polite form is "What language do you speak?"). When they learnt that it was not Arabic but Hebrew, the people usually sighed with relief and became quite friendly.

most people would think its Arabic especially if your using an Israeli accent (which in case some people don't sounds so different then Hebrew with an American accent). and some give you dirty looks just cuz they don't like Israel or Jews and realize that that's Hebrew. but personally i don't know enough Hebrew to speak it in public

Most people outside the main population centers in the U.S. wouldn't know Hebrew from Martian, and they are certainly not interested in knowing the difference. In fact, when I speak Hebrew with my wife at my local JCC the staff there look at us like we are from Mars. What I find ironic is that they answer the phone "Shalom" (the only Hebrew word they know).

Sometimes other Israelis come up to me and start a conversation, or random people who want to try out a little bit of their own Hebrew, lol. But yeah, I've been asked if I'm speaking Arabic a few times.
