Why do Christians support Israel?

What can be done to support the Christians in Israel/Palestine?

  • I'm not talking about zionist Christians, but rather the Catholics, Orthodox, Lutherans, etc. that live throughout the West Bank, Gaza, and Israel. None of the suicide bombers have been Christian. They have tried to promote peace and the Latin Patriarchate (Catholic) schools (which teach both Christians and Muslims) were the first to introduce Hebrew as a subject. For almost a year now, the Israelis have stopped issuing multi-entry visas for priests. Most are from Jordan so can no longer visit their families. If Israel was really interested in peace, wouldn't they want to keep the priests there? Many Christians have emigrated and now down to less than 2% of the population.

My suggestions are: 1. Give money and support to sabeel (http://www.sabeel.org), the Christian peacemaker teams (http://www.cpt.org) or like organizations - believe the Menonites also support peace in Palestine. You can go on one of their delegations or attend a sabeel conference 2. Ask the leader of your church (if you belong to one) to support justice for all Palestinians and divestment/sanctions until such is achieved. Write to any churches which have supported such moves indicating support 3. Create a movement to educate people who hold ridiculous "Christian Zionist" ideas - I think they need to be told that ethnic cleansing of Palestinians included destruction of churches and Christian communities of many denominations - some of the Christians of Palestine are descendants of people who were followers of Christ himself (the same can probably be said of the Muslims too but I don't think that would help convince right-wing Christians) However, the claim that Israel wants peace is pretty much fake hasbera - denying visas to Christians is just another step in the ethnic cleansing campaign

The jewish regime has always been hostile to Christianity,in stark contrast to neighboring Syria and Lebanon. Yeshuv students are taught to spit at the sight of a cross and other such childish behavior; attacks on Orthodox priests have increased sharply since the 70's however, and organized pilgrimages have been sharply curtailed except for evangelicals, who are needed as a foundation of political support in the United States, their foremost politico-military patron state. This tends not to be reported in the American media lest it impair popular support for the jewish state. It is simple religious intolerance, nothing more.

Honestly I can’t understand why the Christian countries are not doing anything to stop Bethlehem siege, not only this, but they are helping Christians to immigrate outside Palestine, which make the christens very small minority in their historical cites, and also this immigration facilities cause the number of Christian females much more than males, in Bet Sahur alone, the ratio of women to men is 7 to 1, that is really sad. Back to your question, Christians should be encouraged to stay in Palestine; Christians should demand their right to visit their holy places and churches in Jerusalem, the world should look at them as Palestinian- Christians, not as Christians with no nationality….

There is a nice Catholic school in Beit Sahour (which has a significant Christian population), and there is considerable animosity between the Muslims and Christians both in and outside of the classroom, because for the most part they see Christians as 'siding' with Jews. I wasn't aware that I was 'trashing' anyone.

They are part of Palestine and they call themselves Palestinians for the last 2000 years. They led the struggle against colonialism and some of them became well known Arab leaders like the late Dr Gorge Habash and Dr Azmy Bishara who wanted by the Israelis for national activities.

So basically what you're saying is muslims are "evil suicide bombers" and christians are "angels" who should get special treatment from Israel because they are not muslims? So you're promoting discrimination of Palestinians based on their relegion huh. Encredible! u show ur true colors!!!!!

For starters I would suggest that the greater Bethlehem area ( Beit Jala; Beit Sahour; Bethlehem; and surrounding Christian villages) be given autonomy separate from both Israel and the PA. Promote the area as a Christian autonomous area and encourage Christians to move or return to the area. As a separate area I believe it will be able to negotiate better conditions with Israel and the PA which will improve the quality of life. It will also preserve the Christian community in the area. If it is successful the same should be done in Nazareth. As for Gaza I do not think much can be done, the community is too small and the situation too precarious. My suggestion is that either Israel or the West Bank should give them refuge. As for the Priest issue, I do not know enough about it, but I hope the situation will be rectified to everyones satisfaction.

Neither side cares. this obviously shows how hypocrite they are. 'Yeah we care about people', but only their people. I have no idea. maybe help them flee faster? RJ, Now you're trashing Christians too? and where do you find the courage to talk of animosity? Okay he wasn't trashing everyone (he always does it, I assume he is trashing by default until someone says he isn't :)) Both sides have enough to worry about so emigration is the only resort left, other solutions are too impractical, emigration is the only way out of the conflict as it is done by themselves without help from either side. they are extremely alone.
