Westeren girl living in Egypt?
-
Salam aleykum! My family is thinking about staying Egypt for a while, and I have some questions. Would I, as a respectful 16 year old westeren girl who speaks a little Arabic be accepted in Egypt(Possibly Cairo)as one of them, by both male and female of all ages? Would I be respected and treated just like they treat their own Egyptian girls, or would I be looked at differently? Is Egypt expensive? Any recomendations of what city? Preferably a place where you experience the real Egypt. And also, would people laugh and make fun of someone not perfectly speaking Arabic(Yet)?

Walaiykom Assalam w Rahmatu Allah w Barakato No you don't need to be worry at all, we will treat as our guest and none would be rude in act or say and if you want to learn Arabic you can register at the AUC for Arabic courses then by time you may learn our slang Egyptian Arabic it's quite difficult to learn and understand =D Don't worry you will be treated with utmost respect, just respect the country,it's culture and people and you'll find yourself at home =) Welcome to Egypt.

actually I think you'll enjoy it here. Like anywhere else, you'll find friendly people and some wont be that good. I think people may even treat you better than they treat Egyptians, cause here we are known for hospitality and everyone will try to make you feel home. Try to live in Cairo cause you'll find here everything from international stores and malls to historic places and you'll experience the real Egypt. Egypt is not expensive its okay. If your Arabic is not good but understandable it'll be fine for you as most people will appreciate ur trial. If you need any help or info you could contact anyone from this category and i'm sure all of us will be more than happy to help you. Good luck!

hi there! Honestly i dont think any other society will accept you as 'one of their own', but that doesnt mean necessary that you wont like it here. sometimes being different is a good fun thing. i am a local Egyptian that was born and raised in switzerland , and when i came back they still treat me a little different. (like i went to mars and came back). it helps knowing where you are from originally. (culture and mother-language). Be aware if you look different you might get picked at. (nothing serious usually). as for respected , i can assure you you get even more respect than Egyptian girls. Egypt as a country isnt expensive at all. Most foreigners relocate to Cairo-Egypt.People who dont like Over-population tho relocate to less populated cities , but mostly depend on their own job and such. (i relocated to Upper Egypt, a city called Beni suef the first city south cairo. but we are from here originally). Egyptian Arabic is a little different in accent than Standard arabic. we habe some different terms and slangs. it might not easy to adopt into a new culture. it really depends on YOU and how fast you adopt to it. i hope you enjoy your stay in Egypt Cheers John

Well I am American and lived 6 years of Egypt. Well to be honest u r treated a little different but it doesn't matter. All people r treated equally in Egypt, no matter where ur from. Egypt is very cheap, it is one of the cheapest countries in the world. I would recommend u to go to Cairo. Good luck!

W'alaikum Asalaam WRWB, I'm from the "west" and I felt comfortable in Egypt. I think that some effort to blend in with local customs, and some modesty in clothing would be to your advantage. This would earn you greater respect, and help you to enjoy the best of Masr. If you have any questions feel free to email me. I am sure that you will enjoy your time. About the language... most people in Cairo will speak English also, and you should be able to understand the Arabic although Masr has it's own dialect..they change *Jiim* to *G* for example...but in general it is easy to follow. I really don't think that people will tease you if your language isn't perfect. Actually I think people there are generally pleased with any effort to speak Arabic now that so much English is demanded in work and school.
