How can I make the Cheerleading Squad?

How can I make the cheerleading squad at my school?

  • I didn't make it last year (I'm a freshman), I didn't make it bc I bombed at tryouts I practiced the dance wrong then choked at the cheer, my stunts were ok I'm a back spot. So I coached and choreographed a 3rd place state winning 3rd grade squad so my Dance skills have improved, I'm good with cheers as I said I just choked. I'm in tumbling and working on my back handspring. What can I do to prepare, like stretch, how should I workout (I go to a gym 3 days a week), what muscles should I build and how?

As a Kentucky Cheerleader who has been cheering on the Blue Squad for two years, I can give you some tips on what to do to build up your strength. If you want to be a collegiate cheerleader like me, then you're going to have to start training like one, that's for sure. The most important part about being a female cheerleader on a collegiate team is to get your cardio and keep that stomach flat and toned. The tighter and flater your stomach is, the better of a flyer you are going to be. The better the flyer, the higher the toss, and the better the stunt will look. You also need to work on your leg strength as tumbling requires a lot of that, ESPECIALLY standing tumbling. Do some squats and lunges. Also, cardio will make your quads A LOT stronger. DO NOT gain too much muscle and have no flexibility. After you're done with your 15 to 20 minute run, I would strongly advise you to stretch when you're done. It's best to stretch when you are warmed up, as your muscles are able to move more fluidly. As for tryouts, all I can say is smile and make sure that you are meeting the requirements. Also, make sure you pay attention to the MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS. It's important to look at that because those are the requirements that you are going to need to make the team. Also, don't think that just because you lack a specific skill, it means that you will be excluded from being picked. If they see that you are coming back for a second time, it just shows that you ARE committed to being on the squad, and it will give you more attention over the new comers. Good luck and keep working on that tumbling and partner stunting, as you will need it in the long run! Kentucky Cheerleader, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbo2HbME_Z4

Confidence...it's the most important thing. Tryouts will always be nerve wracking. Trust me on that. I made varsity all four years of high school and it was always intimidating. If you don't have the confidence that you need, fake it. Seriously, act like you do have the confidence. Other people will see that you feel confident and it will make them take you seriously. I used to act like I was confident in my abilities, and that mindset, even though I knew it was fake, helped me A LOT. Eventually that confidence became real. I know it sounds stupid, but it really is true. Coaching is a huge help. You see a lot of little things. I coached a 4th and 5th grade squad to a national championship and I told them the same thing I told you. No matter what you do, act like it was the greatest thing those judges have ever seen. Look happy, excited, and like you're having fun. That's the most important thing. It's what judges want to see at competition and what spectators and fans want to see at games. Keep working on your tumbling and strengthening your abs, legs, and arms. If you're a backspot those will be very important. Good luck and don't give up!!

Keep working on getting your back handspring, and try putting on a show in front of many people so you can learn to get over your nerves so you won't choke again. Organize a bunch of your friends or family to come watch you do cheerleading, and learn why you get nervous, so you won't get nervous at the tryouts! Good luck!

Honestly, it sounds like you're doing everything right! Just practice the routine. Maybe if you have a friend who's trying out or who is on the team, you can practice together and that should help calm your nerves. In the end, just remember, you can do this! The people evaluating you are just a bunch of high school kids and it the end, who are they to judge you? You know that you can do this and you shouldn't be afraid of them! Good luck!

Hi! Since you say that you choked, it sounds like part of the problem is in your head. You need to visualize yourself performing flawlessly, over and over. There are some great cheerleading hypnosis cds that can help you face tryouts and competitions with unstoppable confidence, synchronized precision and focused concentration. The cds come with a money-back guarantee so you can return them if they don't help- but I think they will! Have the confidence that you can do it. Go in with your head on your shoulders knowing that you can do it. Try your hardest and practice makes perfect. Use some of your best moves, be original and don't use something that's already be done. Show that you're unique and have your own flair.

It's great that you're trying out again! Atleast you know the mistakes from last time!! So that now you can work on them. simple tips- SMILE. even if you don't know a cheer show off those pearly whites. And give spirit as long as they see potential, you will most likely get in. Does your team do jumps? well here's how you can work on them your height comes from your core so make sure to do plenty crunches, or something with your abs. toe touch help- do T jumps- that is when you go into the jump but instead of doing the whole straddle in the air, you just put your arm into and jump up. tuck jumps- you do everything like the T jump but instead of just jumping up you bring your knees to your chest. and also just practice them ( toe touches are my specialty) as for tumbling. try going to a gymnastic class or where you can get one on one training i wouldn't advise trying tumbling without a gym. And also be confident, all cheerleaders mess up a time or. Also ask questions so they know you really want this!
