What do you have to do to try out for cheerleading?

I have no cheerleading experience but I kinda want to try out for my high school team. What do I need to know?

  • I did dance for 2 years but other then that I have no experience in cheerleading. I dont know a lot of the moves, but im a quick learner. So I have two questions should I try out for my high school team and if I do is there anything anyone can tell me that I need to know or that will help me learn cheerleading?

  • Answer:

I dance also! And I havent cheered since i was about in 3rd grade. Im in highschool now and I made the cheerleading team not to long ago. I say you should go for it! At tryouts most likely they'll teach you a cheer or dance or maybe even both! In my case thats what happened. Staying tight with your motions is a big part along with being loud and smiling! And knowing the words to cheers/chants is important. Idk why people say you MUST know how to tumble to be a cheerleader because thats not true. I cant do any sort of backflip but i still made it! Shoot, just doing a cartwheel-round off-split impressed them LOL. OH and jumps! To perfect your jumps stretching is important! But since you dance and stretch alot anyway I dont think you'll have a problem. If you need additional help or questions about jumps or motion cheerwiz.com has alot of stuff! hoped this helped and good luck to you honey :)

Well at all the high schools in my city, in order to try out for the cheer team you need to be able to do left, right, and center splits, left and right herkies, a backhandspring, a front handspring, a back tuck, a heel stretch, and toe-touches, but I guess it's different depending on where you live. You should stretch EVERYDAY to get yourself more flexible. ALWAYS smile. Make your moves tight, and focus. Cheerleading is a difficult sport, but once you get the hang of it, it's not that hard. If your team does stunts, you'd be either a base, spot, or flyer, depending on your weight; if you're a flyer, squeeze your entire body when you go up, it'll help you balance. If you're a base, keep your arms locked. If you're a spot, never take your eyes off the flyer! Watch Youtube videos and read internet articles about cheer moves, they'll help you learn. Try to get some of them down on your own (such as splits and heel stretches and toe touches) before tryouts. Others, like backhandsprings, you should make sure a professional is helping you learn because otherwise you could get seriously injured. If you want to try out for your team, I say go for it; you probably won't be the only one with no cheer experience. Just remember to practice everyday, and you'll be well on your way to being a cheerleader. =] Good luck!

im not a pro but i think u need to know a cheer song or short righmth with a move to go with it or a song then a good summa sault that could work

Well you need to be able to do a spread eagle and a hurky, which are the two jumps. You should also know how to do a cartwheel, a hand stand, backbend, flips... depends on the team. Also you should no how to scream the cheers. and you need to be in really good shape. look up some cheers on youtube and try it out.. if you want to try out go for it... the worst that happens is you try your best and don't make it.

Go for it girl! You have dance experience so it shouldn't be too hard for you. I joined my high school squad as a freshman without ANY exposure to that sort of stuff. I graduated as the captain of the varsity squad. You will get better with time, trust me :)

moves can be helpful for the tryout, but what cheerleading favors most is enthusiasm. you just have to be bright and perform really big motions. also, felxiblity is important. show off your flexiblities at the try outs. that would surely help!

i would take tumbling(gymnastic) lessons just so you can do flips and such, then i would maybe invite someone from the team that knows what theyre doing to help you. it couldnt hurt you only help. smile big =] have funn! goodluckK!

tumbling and splits are a HUGE part of highschool cheerleading if you dont know how to do that then you should sign up to a cheer center and take tumbling and stunt classes. also have lots of school spirit and personality.

You should just learn the basics jumps= toe touch, hurkie, hurdler ,and pike.mostions=try to learn all of them haha & for a better chance to make it try to learn how to tumble..it helps!worked for me.

Try out, the worst that will happen is you don't get in. I think you have to be able to do a back hand spring. Good luck.
