How long to get a roundoff back handspring?

How to get my back handspring by August?

  • I made varsity cheer at my school this year and everyone on varsity is required to try out for competition. Trust me, I would have tried out even if I didn't make varsity lol Anyways, I'm going to start going to my tumbling gym again for the weekly tumbling class (&then some of their open gyms hopefully), but I really need want to get not only my standing back handspring, but my roundoff back handspring as well. What are some things that I can work on alone to get that stuff down (outside of the class). Mind you: -i have a round off (easiest thing in the world lol) -i'm already really flexible (legs and back) - i USED to have a back handspring with a spotter LAST May lol (but DEFINITELY NOT anymore...i tried last week lol) -i don't have a big trampoline Any sincere help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks so much! Brianna (:

Well, ask your instructor where in the trick are you messing up, then you can focus on your problem areas outside of class. For both tricks you'll need strong leg muscles, so you can jump a lot, all the time. And you also need strong wrist muscles, so stretch them and put pressure on them, and do bridges. Try not to think about what happened before, it'll only hold you back because that was a different body under different pressures with different conditions, just make sure your instructor knows your level. You don't need a trampoline. Really, if you have a high bed, you can prep and jump onto that, and end in a hollow but with your arms up. If your back is arched you're doing it wrong and that will hurt your handspring. Don't be scared. Because you can do this.

keep on practicing. -remember- if you fall on your head, get back up and keep trying! you will be able to do it if you keep your mind to it! don't ever be scared to retry it, because its no big deal. you don't need a trampoline, they make it harder to do a bhs, the floor is always the best to practice with because that is was you will be using when you do get it. good luck!(:

Brianna- Congrats on making varsity!!! And since you had your backhandspring, even if it was a year ago, your body will recognize it and it shouldn't be too hard to get back. Core strength will also be a big help. And once you have your standing BHS, a roundoff BHS will be easy, you just need to work on the connectivity. Good luck! :)
